Campgrounds and RV parks near Sultan, WA

Wallace Falls State Park features a lush forest, two lakes and the majestic three-tiered Wallace Falls, with 17 miles of hiking and biking trails. The signature hike climbs to lower, middle, and upper viewpoints of the 265-foot falls, with the middle viewpoint offering panoramic views down the Skykomish River Valley and out to the Olympic Mountains. Index Town Walls, about 12 miles east, offers over 500 routes including trad, sport and aid climbing rated 5.6 to 5.14c, plus roughly 80 bouldering problems rated V1 to V11. The Skykomish River draws anglers, rafters, and kayakers, and U.S. 2 climbs east to Stevens Pass for summer hiking and winter skiing. Closer to town, families can explore the Sky Valley Historical Society Museum, visit farms in Monroe, and ride the Centennial Trail farther west. Wild Sky Wilderness, accessible from the Index and Skykomish areas, provides backcountry hiking and quiet old-growth forest.

The primary camping season in the surrounding Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest runs from late spring through early fall, as many forest campgrounds close during winter due to snow and access conditions. Snowmelt keeps rivers high and waterfalls strong into June, and trails at higher elevations may hold snow well into early summer. July and August are the driest months and the busiest, with weekend sites often booked well in advance. Fall brings color along the Skykomish and quieter campgrounds, but daylight shortens quickly and steady rain returns by mid-October. January is the month with the most rainfall in Sultan, with rain on about 19.5 days and roughly 198 mm of precipitation. Private RV parks in the lowlands generally stay open year-round, while forest service campgrounds and many state park individual sites operate seasonally. At Wallace Falls State Park, backcountry camping is open but weather dependent, and cabins take reservations all year. Snowshoeing is popular on park trails during colder months when conditions allow.

Expect tall conifers, mossy understory, and frequent overcast skies, even in summer. Cell coverage is reliable in Sultan and Monroe but drops quickly once U.S. 2 climbs east toward Skykomish and Stevens Pass. Plan fuel and grocery stops in Monroe or Sultan before heading into the mountains. Forest service campgrounds in the area are generally rustic, with vault toilets and no hookups, while private parks near town offer full hookups, showers, and laundry. Standard backcountry etiquette applies: follow Leave No Trace principles, store food securely to avoid bear encounters, and check fire restrictions before lighting campfires. Wallace Falls is a busy park and the parking lot is usually full by 11 a.m. on weekends, so check the parking lot live camera before leaving and do not park along the narrow county road leading to the entrance. Arrive early or plan a midweek visit.
