Campgrounds and RV parks near Trout Lake, WA

Trout Lake sits at the southern base of Mount Adams in south-central Washington, inside the Mt. Adams Ranger District of Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The small unincorporated community is about an hour and a half from Portland and roughly 30 minutes north of Hood River, Oregon, making it a common staging point for RV trips into the Columbia River Gorge and the Southern Cascades. Camping options range from a developed private RV park to primitive Forest Service sites and dispersed camping on national forest roads. Elk Meadows RV Park is the closest full-service option, with over 50 wooded sites offering full and partial hookups, showers, laundry, a dump station, and cabins. Surrounding Forest Service campgrounds tend to be small, rustic, and tent-oriented, with limited or no RV access on rough gravel roads. In winter, the area shifts to snow recreation. Snow King Sno-Park, Atkisson Sno-Park, Smith Butte Sno-Park, and Flattop Sno-Park serve as plowed trailheads for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing along forest roads on the flanks of Mount Adams.

Elk Meadows RV Park books directly through the property, so reserving as far ahead as possible is wise for July, August, and holiday weekends. Cabins and full-hookup sites tend to go first. Forest Service campgrounds in the Gifford Pinchot are reserved through Recreation.gov where reservations are accepted; smaller primitive sites are often first-come, first-served. Some access roads are rough gravel and not recommended for trailers or motorhomes, so confirm rig suitability before booking. For winter visits, parking at Snow King, Atkisson, Smith Butte, and Flattop Sno-Parks requires a Washington State Parks Sno-Park permit, sold as one-day or seasonal. Permits are available online from November 1 through April 30 and at retail vendors. A current seasonal Sno-Park permit also exempts holders from needing a Discover Pass at designated sno-parks during the winter season.
