Campgrounds and RV parks near Union, WA

Hood Canal is the main draw. The typically calm Hood Canal waters draw visitors for swimming, boating, paddling, crabbing, and fishing with a permit. Oyster and clam harvesting is a signature activity when seasons are open, and low tides expose long stretches of gravel and shell beach for beachcombing. Scuba diving is also popular along the canal. On land, short trails run through Potlatch State Park, and the Skokomish and Hamma Hamma river drainages to the north lead into Olympic National Forest trailheads. The calm but steady winds are good for kite flying on the shore. Hiking is limited at the park itself, but nearby trails showcase the rivers and forests of the eastern Olympic Peninsula. Union has a small commercial strip with a general store and restaurants within a short drive of the campgrounds.

Summer, from late June through early September, is the primary RV season. Days are warm and dry, with average July highs near the upper 70s Fahrenheit, campgrounds run at full capacity, and shellfish seasons often align with peak visitation. Reservations should be locked in well in advance for holiday weekends. Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with lower occupancy, cooler nights, and more rain. Fall brings salmon returns to the Skokomish and other Hood Canal tributaries, and it is a good window for anglers willing to accept wet weather. Storm systems increase from October onward, and November is typically the wettest month of the year. Winter camping is possible but limited. Potlatch State Park stays open year-round, though the state parks system notes seasonal closures and reduced operations during the off-season, and some private resorts reduce services or close loops between November and March. Confirm status directly with each operator before planning a cold-weather stay.

Expect a marine, forested setting. Sites at Potlatch are shaded by tall conifers, and many private resort sites face directly onto the canal. Potlatch State Park has 38 standard campsites, 35 partial-hookup sites for RVs, and two hiker/biker sites, so travelers needing full hookups often prefer the private resorts along the shoreline. RVs and trailers at Potlatch are limited to 60 feet. Cell coverage is generally usable along US 101 and Highway 106 but can drop in tree-covered loops. Tides matter: check a tide chart before planning beach walks or shellfish outings. US 101 runs close to Potlatch, so families with small children should plan crossings carefully. Bring layers, rain gear, and bug protection in shoulder seasons.
