Barrackville sits in Marion County in north-central West Virginia, just north of Fairmont and roughly ten minutes from Interstate 79. The town is best known for the Barrackville Covered Bridge, a 145-foot single-span modified Burr truss over Buffalo Creek built in 1853 by Lemuel and Eli Chenoweth. The surrounding Mountaineer Country region offers a mix of small private RV parks close to town and a state-park campground within an easy drive.

For a lake-based trip, Tygart Lake State Park sits in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in scenic north-central West Virginia, with a campground open spring through fall. It is roughly an hour south of Barrackville and pairs well with day trips to Prickett's Fort State Park and the covered bridges of Marion and Barbour counties.
Things to do near Barrackville
The Barrackville Covered Bridge, built in 1853 by Lemuel and Eli Chenoweth as a modified Burr truss spanning 145 feet in a single span across Buffalo Creek, is the town's signature stop. It was closed to automotive traffic in 1991 after 138 years of service and is now used by pedestrians. Buffalo Creek runs beneath it and offers fishing and photography spots within walking distance.
Families staying nearby can pair the bridge with Prickett's Fort State Park north of Fairmont and the Mon River Rail-Trail system. Farther afield, Tygart Lake stretches 10 miles long and covers 1,750 acres, drawing visitors for boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, and swimming from a designated beach.
Tygart Lake State Park has five distinct trails, ranging in difficulty from light leisurely strolls to more moderate and challenging hikes, and Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown adds cliff-top overlooks and mountain-bike routes.

Late spring through early fall is the primary RV season in this part of West Virginia. The Tygart Lake State Park campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting, and sits at the end of the park road, approximately three miles from the park's east entrance, so trips centered on that park need to fall inside its operating window. Most private parks in the area follow a similar warm-weather pattern, though Sand Springs Campground now advertises year-round operation.
Summer brings warm, humid days and the busiest weekends, especially around Independence Day and West Virginia University football weekends in Morgantown, when Fairmont-area parks fill early. Booking six to eight weeks out is common for holiday weekends. May is typically the wettest month, and September the driest, so shoulder-season trips often trade cooler nights for drier weather.
Fall brings cool nights and strong leaf color across the Allegheny foothills, and it is the quietest of the shoulder seasons. Winter camping options are limited, and most state-park and lakeside campgrounds close by the end of October and reopen in April.
How to book campsites near Barrackville
Private parks in the Fairmont and Morgantown corridor, including Fairmont Hills RV Park, Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC, Indian Meadows Campground, and Sand Springs Campground, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Long-stay and seasonal sites are common at these properties, so calling ahead is the fastest way to confirm nightly availability.
For Tygart Lake State Park, campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday, or one night Sunday through Thursday. There is a 14-night maximum stay, and the campground has 36 camping sites, so summer weekends should be locked in well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Barrackville is rolling Appalachian foothills, and many campgrounds sit on wooded slopes rather than open flats. Expect gravel or grass pads, mixed shade, and narrow access roads at the smaller parks. At Tygart Lake State Park, sites are largely wooded and access is at the end of a winding park road, so drivers of larger rigs should call ahead to confirm access and site fit.
Hookups vary. Ten Tygart Lake sites come with 50-amp electric and water hookups and 26 are standard sites; full-hookup sites are not available at that park, while Sand Springs offers full-hookup pull-throughs with 30/50-amp service. Cell service is reliable in Barrackville and Fairmont but drops in the deeper hollows, so download maps before leaving town.
