Campgrounds and RV parks near Boomer, WV

The main draw is New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Families use the Canyon Rim Visitor Center for the classic bridge overlook, and the Endless Wall and Long Point trails offer short hikes suitable for most ages. Whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley rivers is the region's signature activity, with commercial outfitters running half-day family trips on the Upper New and expert releases on the Gauley in the fall. Rock climbing, mountain biking on the Arrowhead Trails, and fishing on the Kanawha and New rivers round out the outdoor options. For rainy days or lower-effort outings, Hawks Nest State Park has an aerial tram, and the historic mining town of Thurmond is a short drive for a self-guided history stop.

Late spring through mid-fall is the practical RV season. April and May bring wildflowers and moderate river flows, and most private campgrounds near Boomer are open by early April. Summer is peak season for family rafting, hiking, and bridge-area sightseeing, with warm days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Appalachian plateau. September and October are the busiest weekends of the year. Gauley Season runs on scheduled dam releases from Summersville Lake across six weekends beginning in early September, filling rafting outfitters and nearby campgrounds well in advance. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October, coinciding with Bridge Day on the third Saturday of October, when the New River Gorge Bridge closes to vehicles for a BASE-jumping festival. Winter is quiet. Many private campgrounds reduce services or close from late November through March, and mountain roads can ice over. Travelers coming in the shoulder seasons should confirm hookup availability directly with each park.

Terrain around Boomer is steep and wooded. Access roads to riverside campgrounds often involve narrow switchbacks, and drivers of larger Class A motorhomes should call ahead to confirm the route. Cell service is inconsistent in the gorge itself and improves near Fayetteville, Oak Hill, and along US-19. Sites range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic tent and cabin setups. Expect gravel pads, mixed shade, and shared bathhouses at most private parks. Rafting-focused campgrounds may be lively on summer weekends, with shuttle traffic in the mornings and group gatherings in the evenings. Bears are present throughout the region, so food and trash must be secured. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving pests, and evening temperatures can drop sharply even in summer due to elevation.
