Campgrounds and RV parks near Cassville, WV

Coopers Rock State Forest is the primary draw. The forest is best known for scenic overlooks of the Cheat River in Cheat Canyon, and offers biking, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing, along with roughly 50 miles of trails and several playgrounds for children. Water activity centers on the Cheat River, which is well known for whitewater rafting, and the Monongahela River corridor closer to town. Sand Springs Campground adds on-site amenities including an Olympic-size pool and a game room and arcade, which work well for families with kids in tow. In Morgantown, RV travelers can add a West Virginia University campus visit, riverfront trails along the Monongahela, and access to Cheat Lake for boating and fishing. In colder months, cross-country skiing terrain and winter hiking are available across Coopers Rock.

The main RV camping window in this area runs spring through fall. Coopers Rock State Forest campgrounds open by the first weekend in April. Rhododendron Campground closes on the first Saturday in November, and McCollum Campground remains open until the first Saturday of December, weather permitting. Summer is peak season. Warm, humid days and cool mountain nights bring the heaviest booking pressure, especially around West Virginia University football weekends in Morgantown and holiday weekends. Fall delivers hardwood color across the Cheat Canyon overlooks and lighter crowds after Labor Day, with cool overnight temperatures returning by mid-October. Winter is the quietest stretch. The main entrance to the southern portion of Coopers Rock is closed each year from December 31 through March 31, and visitors must park at the first lot off Interstate 68 and walk in. Many private RV parks in the area reduce services or close, so travelers should confirm winter operation directly with the campground before arriving.

Sites in this region tend to be wooded and rolling rather than flat and open. RVers at Coopers Rock have noted that some backing angles and roadside ditches can make setup tricky, so checking site dimensions before booking is worth the effort. The road into the state forest campground is long and narrow with little shoulder, which favors slower driving with larger rigs. McCollum Campground offers 25 sites with electric hookups, a central bathhouse with hot showers and laundry, and Wi-Fi for registered guests. It accommodates RVs, trailers, fifth wheels, tents, and truck or van camping, with most sites able to fit rigs between 30 and 50 feet. Rhododendron Campground is primitive and open only to tent and hammock camping. Leashed pets are permitted at Coopers Rock. Cell coverage is patchy in the forested terrain, so travelers should download maps before arrival.
