Campgrounds and RV parks near Cheat Lake, WV

The lake supports powerboating, water skiing, jet skis, and tubing along the main channel, with quieter backwaters used for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for bass, walleye, catfish, pike, and trout. Kayak, canoe, and jet ski rentals are available at Sunset Beach Marina. The Cheat Lake Trail runs about 4.5 miles along the northeastern shoreline on a 12-foot paved path suitable for walkers and cyclists, with docks and pavilions for picnics. Coopers Rock State Forest is the regional draw for hiking, bouldering, and rock climbing, with an overlook above the Cheat River gorge and roughly 50 miles of multi-use trails. Morgantown adds restaurants, WVU athletics, and the West Virginia Botanic Garden. Fall color along the Cheat River corridor typically peaks in mid to late October.

Cheat Lake has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer is the primary RV season: daytime highs in July average in the low 80s Fahrenheit, the lake is fully drawn up for recreation, and private campgrounds like Sand Springs Campground and Tall Oaks Campground fill quickly on weekends around Independence Day, WVU move-in, and football Saturdays. Spring brings frequent rain, with May averaging the most rainfall of any month at roughly four inches. Trails at Coopers Rock can be muddy and creek levels can run high, but shoulder-season sites are easier to book. Fall is a strong RV window: cool nights, generally drier weather in September, and peak foliage along the Cheat River gorge in October. Winter camping is limited. Coopers Rock's Rhododendron Campground closes on the first Saturday in November, McCollum stays open until the first Saturday of December weather permitting, and many private campgrounds close or shift to reduced operations through March. Mountain snowfall east of the lake can affect access on secondary roads.

Roads into the Cheat Lake area are hilly and winding once travelers leave I-68, and the access road down to Cheat Lake Park is narrow with limited parking. Larger Class A and long fifth-wheel rigs should confirm site length and approach roads with the campground before arrival, particularly for properties tucked back on gravel access lanes. Cell coverage is reliable near the lake and Morgantown but drops off in the forested areas east toward Coopers Rock. Hookup availability varies: private parks generally offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water and often sewer, while state forest sites at Rhododendron are tent-only and primitive. Bring leveling blocks, as many sites are cut into sloped terrain. Black bears are present in the surrounding forest, so store food and trash securely. Biting insects peak from late May through August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
