Campgrounds and RV parks near Clendenin, WV

Clendenin sits along the lower Elk River in northern Kanawha County, about twenty minutes northeast of Charleston. The town is a working-class river community that has become a practical hub for paddlers and anglers exploring the Elk River corridor, with a state-designated boat ramp at Virginia Avenue and easy access to the Elk River Trail. RV travelers use Clendenin as a base for river days close to town and longer drives south to the New River Gorge. Campground options near town range from small, river-focused private parks to a municipal lake campground north of the city. Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery and New River Campground Inc. offer river-adjacent stays, while Statts Mills RV Park serves travelers heading toward Jackson and Roane counties. Charles Fork Lake, operated by the City of Spencer, provides electric and non-electric sites at a quiet mountain lake. For a bigger national-park trip, The Outpost at The New River Gorge sits near the New River Gorge Bridge, roughly an hour and a half south, and works well as a second-leg stop on a longer West Virginia loop.

Private campgrounds in the Clendenin area, including Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery, New River Campground Inc., and Statts Mills RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Calling ahead is the norm, particularly for holiday weekends and during peak fall color. Charles Fork Lake offers camping with electric hookups and non-electric sites, vault toilets, and a picnic pavilion; the campground is managed by the City of Spencer, so booking runs through the city rather than a national platform. For the national park leg of a trip, rules differ. All New River Gorge campgrounds are first-come, first-served year-round with no reservations accepted, and sites range from riverside tent spots to drive-in sites for small and medium RVs. Private parks near the gorge, including The Outpost at The New River Gorge, book directly and fill early in fall.
