Campgrounds and RV parks near Danville, WV

Off-road riding drives most trips. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are a professionally designed system built for all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles, mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrian users, with hundreds of miles now open across southern West Virginia counties. User permits are required for every rider and passenger and can be purchased online, at staffed trailheads, or from authorized vendors in the region. Beyond the trails, families can fish and paddle the Little Coal River, tour coal-heritage sites in nearby Madison and Logan, and use Chief Logan State Park for hiking, swimming, and the on-site museum. Amenities at Chief Logan include mini-golf, paved sporting courts, a playground, a swimming pool, a museum with rotating exhibits, and the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater, which hosts concerts and outdoor theater performances during the summer.

Riding and camping season runs roughly April through October, with the heaviest use on summer weekends and during fall color. The Hatfield-McCoy trail systems are open year-round to ATVs, dirt bikes, and utility vehicles, but winter weather, mud, and short daylight limit most casual visitors from December through February. Spring brings green-up and higher water in the Coal River, which is good for paddling but can also mean muddy trails after storms. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; early mornings and evenings are the most comfortable time to ride. Fall is the most popular RV season, with cooler temperatures, drier trails, and hardwood color usually peaking in mid to late October. Holiday weekends, ATV rallies, and Trailfest events fill private RV parks in Boone, Logan, and Mingo counties quickly. Booking well ahead is important for any Friday or Saturday stay between Memorial Day and late October.

This is an ATV-focused region. Expect gravel pads, generous parking for trailers and toy haulers, and neighbors unloading side-by-sides in the morning. Many private parks sit directly on or minutes from a Hatfield-McCoy trailhead, and community-connector trails let riders reach fuel and food without loading up. At Chief Logan, the campground offers 26 sites, 14 with full water, sewer, and electric hookups and 12 with electric and water only, plus hot showers at a centrally located bathhouse. About 19 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 30 and 40 feet. Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows and on the trails, so downloading offline maps before arrival is a good idea. Roads into the coalfields are narrow and winding; drive slowly with a long rig.
