Overview of campgrounds near Fairmont
Fairmont sits in north-central West Virginia's Marion County, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains along the Monongahela River. The area offers a mix of private RV parks close to town and state park camping within easy driving range, making it a workable base for travelers exploring the Mountaineer Country region.
Closest to town, Fairmont Hills RV Park and Oakdale Village Mobile City provide hookups near I-79 and downtown amenities. Indian Meadows Campground and Sand Springs Campground add wooded, family-oriented settings within a short drive.
For a lake setting, Tygart Lake State Park sits along a 10-mile-long lake covering 1,750 acres, with the surrounding park covering an additional 391 acres, roughly a 30 to 45-minute drive south toward Grafton. The campground has 36 sites: ten come with 50-amp electric and water hookups and 26 are standard sites, a dump station sits near the beach area, and full hookup sites are not available. Camping units need to be less than 32 feet in length and capable of making tight turns, and there are no pull-through sites.
Things to do near Fairmont
Water recreation centers on Tygart Lake, with fishing for bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, and panfish from shore or boat, plus boating, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, and swimming at the designated beach.
History-minded families can visit Prickett's Fort State Park, a 188-acre state park north of Fairmont near the confluence of Prickett's Creek and the Monongahela River, featuring a reconstructed refuge fort that commemorates life on the Virginia frontier during the late 18th century. Costumed interpreters demonstrate blacksmithing, carpentry, spinning, and other colonial crafts inside the fort.
For land-based activity, the park provides access to both the MCPARC trail to Fairmont and the Mon River Trail to Morgantown, a paved rail-trail popular for biking and walking. Tygart Lake State Park has five distinct trails, ranging in difficulty from light leisurely strolls to more moderate and challenging hikes.

The primary RV camping season runs mid-spring through late fall. Tygart Lake State Park's campground operates from mid-April through October, opening spring through fall, weather permitting. Private campgrounds around Fairmont often extend shoulder-season stays but can restrict water hookups once overnight temperatures drop.
Summer brings the busiest bookings, warm humid days, and afternoon thunderstorms. Fall is a strong choice for scenery, with leaf-peepers flocking to the park in the fall to see the fantastic colors, and cooler nights that reduce insect pressure. Spring can be wet, with May typically the rainiest month in the region.
Winter camping options are limited. State park campgrounds close, and remaining private sites see fewer visitors due to cold temperatures and occasional snow. Travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm hookup availability, restroom and shower access, and gate hours directly with the campground before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Fairmont
State park sites at Tygart Lake are reserved through the West Virginia State Parks system. Campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone or at the campground office, and reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or one night Sunday through Thursday. Sites can be reserved for up to two weeks. Unreserved sites are first-come, first-served, and reservations can be made online, in person, or over the phone.
Private parks such as Fairmont Hills RV Park, Oakdale Village Mobile City, Indian Meadows Campground, and Sand Springs Campground handle reservations directly, typically by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends fill first, so booking several weeks ahead is prudent. Confirm rig length limits when reserving, particularly for state park sites.
What to expect at Fairmont campgrounds
Terrain around Fairmont is hilly and wooded. State park sites in particular can be uneven: ten electric sites cluster near the entrance with level parking but minimal shade or privacy between neighbors, while the remaining 26 standard sites occupy steeper terrain among trees, where finding level ground proves difficult on many spots. Bring leveling blocks.
Hookup expectations vary. At Tygart Lake, ten sites come with 50-amp electric and water hookups and 26 are standard, with a dump station near the beach and no full hookup sites available. Private parks near town more commonly offer full hookups and 30/50-amp service.
Pets are welcome at most area campgrounds on leash. Dogs and cats are allowed on hiking and walking trails but must be leashed at all times. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Fairmont and along I-79, but weakens in wooded state park sites.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fairmont, WV?
RV rental in Fairmont is affordable compared to major tourist hubs, which is part of what makes a West Virginia road trip so appealing. On RVezy, you can typically expect travel trailers from about $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class A motorhomes from $200 to $375. Pair that with local campgrounds starting around $40 to $50 per night and your daily total stays very reasonable. To find a cheap RV rental in Fairmont, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of April or October, and use the price filter on the search page. Tip: avoid WVU football weekends in nearby Morgantown when regional demand spikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairmont%2C%20West%20VirginiaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Fairmont?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fairmont. West Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older and will upload a clear photo of a valid license during the quick ID verification step at checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how simple the approval process is, often completed within a short time after booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included on RVezy?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons guests feel confident booking their first Fairmont RV trip. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you control how much peace of mind you want. If you get a flat on I-79 heading toward Prickett's Fort State Park or have a battery issue at Tygart Lake State Park, one call gets help dispatched. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip so you can focus on enjoying the Mountain State.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Fairmont RV trip plans change?
You can book with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, so terms are consistent across listings. There is a grace period right after booking for a full refund, and refund eligibility after that depends on how many days before your trip you cancel. Cancellation terms are not displayed on individual listings because they are handled centrally by RVezy. The support team is available before, during, and after your trip to help if plans shift, which is especially reassuring given the occasional Appalachian thunderstorm or winter weather event around Fairmont.

Tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed and confirm any pet cleaning fee so expectations are clear before pickup.
wvstateparks.com/park/coopers-rock-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Fairmont?
Yes, RV delivery in Fairmont is a great option if you would rather not drive a big rig through the Appalachian hills. Many hosts on RVezy offer delivery and setup, meaning they will tow or drive the RV to your campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before leaving. Popular drop-off spots include Tygart Lake State Park about 20 miles south and Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown. Use the Delivery filter on the search page to find listings that offer this service. It is the easiest way to enjoy a campervan rental in Fairmont without ever sitting behind the wheel.

Fairmont's location in north-central West Virginia makes it a great launchpad for an RV road trip. Mileage allowances are set by each host and shown clearly on every listing, often around 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings. Popular routes within easy range include Morgantown and Coopers Rock (about 25 miles), Tygart Lake State Park (about 20 miles), Blackwater Falls State Park (about 90 miles), Seneca Rocks (about 105 miles), and New River Gorge National Park (about 180 miles). Tip: if you are planning a big loop through the Monongahela National Forest, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host about a custom package.

Valley Falls State Park is a popular day-use destination with nearby private camping options. Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown features wooded electric sites and famous overlooks. Audra State Park to the south sits along the Middle Fork River with electric sites. For private full-hookup parks, look along the I-79 corridor between Fairmont and Bridgeport. wvstateparks.com/park/tygart-lake-state-park/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Fairmont?

Local tip: time your visit around community events in downtown Fairmont for added small-town charm.
weather.gov/rlx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting one in Fairmont?
You've got this, and Fairmont is a great place for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup that covers leveling, hookups, brake controllers, and dump procedures. If you would rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. For first-timers who want to drive, smaller Class C motorhomes and travel trailers handle the hilly terrain around Fairmont more easily than large Class A rigs. Stick to I-79 and US-250 for the smoothest roads, take it slow on narrow rural routes until you feel comfortable, and remember you can message your host any time during the trip with questions.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
You are not on your own out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is just one call away whether you are parked at Valley Falls State Park, climbing the grades on US-19, or on I-68 near Coopers Rock. Roadside covers items like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. For RV-specific issues like a generator or slide-out, message your host directly through the RVezy app since they know their rig best. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after your trip to help coordinate. Tip: snap a quick photo of any issue so the support team can help faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Fairmont RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes. Interstate travel is allowed and one of the best reasons to rent an RV in Fairmont, since you are within easy driving distance of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia. Popular cross-border trips include Ohiopyle State Park, PA (about 60 miles), Deep Creek Lake, MD (about 75 miles), and Shenandoah National Park, VA (about 180 miles). Canadian travel may be possible with host approval and the right documentation, so message the host before booking if that is your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage stops at the U.S. border. Within North America, the open road is yours.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a West Virginia RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables in your RV rental West Virginia budget, but it is easy to estimate. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 mpg, and large Class A motorhomes 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves, but your tow vehicle will drop a few mpg while towing. Gas prices in Fairmont and along the I-79 corridor often run near or slightly below the national average. Tip: fuel up in Fairmont or Bridgeport before heading into the mountains around Elkins and Davis, where stations are sparse. Apps like GasBuddy can save real money on long Appalachian loops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fairmont?
For peak summer weekends and fall foliage season, book WV State Park campsites several months ahead through wvstateparks.com, which accepts reservations up to a year in advance. Tygart Lake, Audra, and Blackwater Falls fill fastest. Private parks along the I-79 corridor near Fairmont and Bridgeport are usually easier to grab on shorter notice, often within a few weeks. For National Forest sites in the nearby Monongahela, use recreation.gov. Tip: midweek stays in May or September often have great availability, so flexible travelers can sometimes book just two or three weeks out and still snag a prime lakeside site.
wvstateparks.com/everything-you-need-to-know-to-reserve-a-campsite-at-wv-state-parks/What are driving conditions like around Fairmont?
Driving conditions around Fairmont are very RV-friendly on the main routes, with I-79 and I-68 offering wide lanes and manageable grades through the hills. It gets more adventurous on smaller state roads winding into the mountains, such as routes toward Tygart Lake or US-50 east toward Aurora, where you will find twists and steeper 6 to 8 percent grades. Take it slow, use lower gears on descents, and pull over for locals if a line forms behind you. In winter, snow and black ice can hit between November and March, so check 511.wv.gov before heading out. Local tip: avoid the I-79 stretch around Morgantown during WVU game-day traffic on autumn Saturdays.
511.wv.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds around Fairmont?
Campgrounds near Fairmont generally come well-equipped. At full-hookup private parks along the I-79 corridor you can expect 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. State park campgrounds like Tygart Lake and Audra typically offer electric and water at the site with centralized dump stations and bathhouses, but no individual sewer hookups. For potable water fill-ups and dumping between stops, many state parks let day-use visitors pay a small fee to use the dump station. Tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving a developed campground, since rural overlooks and trailheads rarely have potable water available.
wvstateparks.com/park/audra-state-park/What's inside the RV rentals available in Fairmont?
You will be impressed by how complete the RVs on RVezy are for your Fairmont RV trip. Most rentals come fully equipped with comfortable beds (queens are common, with bunks in family rigs), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, awnings, outdoor speakers, and generators or solar setups for off-grid stays at spots like Spruce Knob. Wi-Fi is sometimes available via host hotspots, though cell signal can be patchy in the Monongahela backcountry. Each listing has a detailed amenities list, so you can filter by sleeps count, bathroom, generator, or air conditioning to match your trip.
fs.usda.gov/mnfWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Fairmont RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer add-ons that make your motorhome rental in Fairmont even smoother. Common extras include linen and towel packages, kitchen and cookware kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, and propane top-offs. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup for a fee based on distance, sometimes free within Fairmont city limits and scaling up for drop-offs at Tygart Lake or Coopers Rock. Pickup and drop-off times, mileage allowances, and pet fees are all spelled out on each listing. Tip: bundle delivery with a linen package if you are flying into Pittsburgh International Airport (about 90 miles north) and would rather not haul gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairmont%2C%20West%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, with the total clearly broken out: nightly rate, mileage, add-ons, protection plan, and taxes. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card before pickup, then released after the trip once the RV is returned in good shape. Deposit amounts vary by listing and RV value. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV clean and with fuel and propane at the agreed level, and stay within your mileage. It is straightforward and renter-friendly.
