Campgrounds and RV parks near Glenville, WV

Fishing, paddling, and short hikes dominate the local recreation menu. Cedar Creek State Park has three fishing lakes plus paddleboat rentals, and the surrounding forest supports a network of marked hiking trails. Stonewall Jackson Lake, reached from Briar Point Campground at Stonewall, adds bass fishing, powerboating, and a marina. Family-oriented amenities at Cedar Creek are unusually strong for a state park: a heated outdoor swimming pool open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, a miniature golf course, and courts for tennis, basketball, and volleyball. A restored log cabin serves as the campground check-in station, and a one-room schoolhouse on site is open for summer tours. Glenville itself hosts the West Virginia State Folk Festival in June, a useful anchor date for planning a summer trip.

Central West Virginia has a four-season climate with real winters and warm, humid summers. Glenville sits in a humid subtropical zone with a large seasonal temperature contrast: summers are warm and winters are cold with regular snowfall, while rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year, with heavier downpours and afternoon thunderstorms most common in the warmer months. Season length at public campgrounds is the biggest planning factor. Cedar Creek State Park's campground typically opens in April and closes at the end of October, which is standard for West Virginia State Parks. Private parks along the I-79 corridor, including Flatwoods KOA Journey and Elk River Camp and RV, generally operate on longer seasons, in some cases with limited winter services. Late spring brings the wettest stretch, with May and June the two wettest months on record. Summer weekends and holidays fill first at Cedar Creek State Park and Briar Point Campground at Stonewall, and fall foliage in October is a strong secondary peak that books well in advance.

Expect wooded, rolling terrain and narrow secondary roads. State park sites at Cedar Creek come with a water hookup, 30-amp electric only, fire ring, grill, and picnic table, so travelers with 50-amp coaches should plan on an adapter and load management. Bathhouses with showers and a laundry facility are available in the campground, and dump stations are located at the camp office. Cell coverage is inconsistent once off the I-79 corridor, and grocery runs are easiest from Weston or Sutton rather than Glenville itself. Pets are welcome at Cedar Creek but must be leashed and restrained in outdoor areas at all times. Drivers of larger rigs should note the approach: Cedar Creek is reached on winding two-lane roads off Route 5. Take the route slowly and arrive in daylight for the first visit.
