The camping season in this part of West Virginia is anchored by spring through fall operations at the state park. Tygart Lake Campground is open spring through fall, typically running from mid-April through October in the Allegheny Mountain foothills. Summer is peak season for lake use, and holiday weekends fill early. Fall brings cooler nights and leaf color across the ridges, drawing weekend traffic through October. Cabins remain available later in the year at some parks, but the main tent and RV loops close for the winter. Winter is cold and snowy in the region. Summers are warm, while winters are cold and bring significant snowfall, and precipitation is fairly wet overall, spread relatively evenly throughout the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snow. Most public campgrounds are closed during that stretch, so RV travelers wanting a winter stay should confirm operating status with private parks directly. Spring rains can saturate grass sites, so early-season travelers should ask about site conditions before arrival.

Terrain shapes the experience at the state park. Ten electric and water sites cluster on more level ground, while the remaining standard sites occupy hillier terrain among trees where finding level parking can take some work. The RV and trailer length limit at this campground is 70 feet, and the campsites are mostly grass, which in rainy periods can turn the site into a muddy mess that may be hard to extricate larger vehicles from. Connectivity is decent but uneven. Almost all campsites pick up great Wi-Fi, but the signal is weak from sites 28-40 and typically has one bar. Pets are welcome at the state park. Dogs are welcome at Tygart Lake State Park, allowed on the hiking and walking trails but must be on a leash, and owners must clean up after their pets. Private RV parks near Fairmont vary in shade, spacing, and hookup mix, so confirm details before towing in.
