Campgrounds near Granville, West Virginia
Granville sits on the Monongahela River just west of Morgantown in north-central West Virginia, at the edge of the Appalachian Plateau. The area is a practical base for RV trips: Interstate 79 and Interstate 68 meet nearby, and campgrounds sit within a short drive of West Virginia University, the Mon River Rail-Trail, and the canyon country around the Cheat River.
RV options close to town lean toward small, privately owned parks. Indian Meadows Campground, Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC, Fairmont Hills RV Park, Sand Springs Campground, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds all sit within roughly a half hour of Granville and cover a range of hookup and site styles. Sand Springs Campground is a wooded park in the Morgantown area with spacious sites, though gravel pads can require leveling blocks.
Public land camping is close too. Coopers Rock State Forest is located just off I-68, approximately 13 miles from Morgantown, and features canyon overlooks, sandstone cliffs for climbing, 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing terrain, trout fishing and nearby whitewater rafting.
Things to do around Granville
The Cheat River Gorge is the marquee outdoor draw. Bands of rock cliffs line the Cheat River Gorge and provide numerous overlooks, with the main overlook furnishing a panorama of the gorge and distant horizons. Families use the same corridor for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and swimming on calmer stretches. Coopers Rock also has playgrounds and picnic shelters that work well for a base-camp day.
On the water, Cheat Lake sits minutes from Granville and offers boating, paddling, and swimming access. In town, the Mon River Rail-Trail connects riverside parks for easy family biking, and Morgantown adds WVU sports, restaurants, and shopping.
For slower days, the park offers biking, fishing, hiking and rock climbing, with several scattered playgrounds for children to enjoy. Stocked trout streams and short interpretive trails give younger kids something to do without a long drive.

The month with the most rainfall is May, when the rain falls for 20.5 days and typically aggregates up to 4.02 inches of precipitation. Book sites with good drainage and expect muddy trails.
Summer is the peak camping window. Days are warm and humid, evenings cool off in the hollows, and nearly every private park and public site is busy on weekends. Most private campgrounds around Granville stay open through the shoulder seasons, while state forest sites follow a set opening window.
Fall brings some of the region's best conditions: cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color that peaks in mid to late October. Winter shuts down most public campgrounds. Coopers Rock campgrounds are open by the first weekend in April; Rhododendron Campground closes for the season on the first Saturday in November, and McCollum Campground remains open until the first Saturday of December, weather permitting.
How to book campgrounds near Granville
Private RV parks in and around Granville, including Indian Meadows Campground, Fairmont Hills RV Park, Sand Springs Campground, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds, generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC leans toward longer-term and monthly stays, so call ahead to confirm short-stay availability for RV renters.
For state-managed sites at Coopers Rock, use the West Virginia State Parks system. Campsites may be reserved online at wvstateparks.com or by calling 833-WVPARKS. Reservations must be for at least two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or a single night Sunday through Thursday. Coopers Rock has two campgrounds and 50 total campsites. Each site can be reserved a year in advance. Book summer weekends and fall foliage dates as early as possible; last-minute openings do surface after cancellations.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Granville is hilly, with narrow winding approaches to some parks. Some access roads have no shoulder and a noticeable drop off from the pavement, so take care when driving a rig near the campground. Larger Class A rigs and long trailers should confirm site length and access grades before booking.
Hookup levels vary. The expansion adds 25 new campsites to McCollum Campground, bringing the total to 50. Each new site is equipped with 50-amp electric service, water hookups, a picnic table, fire ring and grill, ideal for RVs, trailers, 5th wheels, tents and van campers. Private parks near town typically offer full hookups; some sites can require leveling blocks on gravel pads.
Cell coverage is generally solid near Granville and Morgantown but drops in the Cheat River canyon and inside Coopers Rock. Bring drinking water, firewood from local sources, and layers, since summer nights and shoulder-season mornings can be cool.
