Camping near Harts, West Virginia
Harts sits in Lincoln County in southern West Virginia, along the Guyandotte River corridor between Logan and Huntington. The area is rural and heavily forested, with narrow hollows, ridge-top views, and easy access to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. RV travelers typically use Harts as a base for ATV riding, lake days, and river fishing.
The closest developed campground with RV hookups is Chief Logan State Park, roughly a half-hour drive south. Little Coal River Campground and Cabin serves riders heading to the Little Coal River trail system. Beech Fork State Park lies to the west toward Huntington and offers the largest campsite inventory in the region, with many lakefront sites.
For travelers coming off I-64, Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday in the Milton area is the most convenient full-service option, and Trails 2 Paradise caters to off-road riders. Together these five properties cover the main use cases: state-park camping, trail-side stays, and interstate-accessible RV parks.
Things to do around Harts
Off-road riding is the marquee activity. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail system spans hundreds of miles across southern West Virginia, including the Rockhouse, Bearwallow, Buffalo Mountain, Pinnacle Creek, and Little Coal River trailheads. Chief Logan State Park works well as a home base for riders reaching several of these systems.
On the water, Beech Fork Lake anchors most non-ATV plans, with fishing and boating from the state park. Chief Logan State Park adds hiking trails, an outdoor swimming pool with a water slide, mini-golf, and a wildlife exhibit featuring animals native to West Virginia.
Families traveling with kids often add a Blenko Glass factory visit in Milton and a stop at the Huntington Museum of Art on rest days.

The core camping season runs April through October. At Beech Fork State Park, Old Orchard Campground stays open year-round while Four Coves, Moxley Branch, and Lake View operate seasonally, generally mid-April through October. Chief Logan's campground is open spring through fall.
Spring brings wildflowers and mild temperatures, but wet weather is common. Spring rains can leave trails muddy and slippery, so tires suited to wet conditions matter for riders. Summer is the busiest stretch: warm days, thunderstorms in the afternoons, and full campground rosters on weekends. Reserve early for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.
Fall is widely considered the prime window. Foliage peaks in October with reds, oranges, and yellows, and cooler temperatures make for comfortable riding. Winter camping is possible at Old Orchard, though most other loops close and campers should expect snow and freezing nights.
How to book near Harts
West Virginia State Parks use a single reservation system that covers Chief Logan State Park and Beech Fork State Park. Campsites can be reserved online at wvstateparks.com, by phone, or at the park office, and sites open for reservation up to 12 months in advance. A two-night minimum applies on Friday and Saturday, one-night stays are allowed Sunday through Thursday, and the maximum stay is 14 nights.
Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA website or by phone, with holiday-weekend deposits treated as non-refundable.
Little Coal River Campground and Cabin and Trails 2 Paradise are smaller trail-town operators. Book directly with the operator, and confirm rig-length limits before arriving with a large motorhome.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the hollows are narrow and winding. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels should stick to state-park routes off US-119 and I-64 rather than back-country shortcuts. Access to Beech Fork is straightforward, with roads wide enough for RVs and trailers.
Site quality varies by campground. Chief Logan has 26 sites, 14 with full water, sewer, and electric and 12 with water and electric only, plus a central bathhouse with hot showers. Beech Fork offers 275 campsites across four areas, 99 of them lakefront, with paved pads, grills, picnic tables, and full bathhouses.
Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows around Harts. Download maps offline, top off fuel and groceries in Logan, Chapmanville, or Milton, and expect wildlife, especially deer, to move through campgrounds at dawn and dusk.
