Campgrounds near Logan, West Virginia
Logan sits in the southwestern coalfields of West Virginia and functions as one of the main basecamps for the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a public off-road system that spans hundreds of miles across nine southern counties. The trail network is managed by the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority, and Logan is an ATV-friendly town where permitted machines can legally use marked streets to reach fuel, food, and lodging.
Campground options run from a full-service state park to trail-side private resorts built around ATV access. Chief Logan State Park anchors the state-run option with a 26-site campground inside a roughly 4,000-acre park. Rockhouse RV Park, Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC, Paradise Island of Christian, WV, and Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort cluster near the Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and Buffalo Mountain trail systems.
Most travelers pick a campground based on which trail system they plan to ride, since the connected Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and Buffalo Mountain systems share more than 300 miles of contiguous riding.
Things to do near Logan
The main draw is off-road riding on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. Bearwallow is the trail system located nearest Logan and is one of the original three Hatfield-McCoy systems, with a mix of scenic vistas and Most Difficult-rated routes, and it is open to full-size ORVs and Jeeps in addition to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and Buffalo Mountain connect for long point-to-point rides across more than 300 miles. All riders and passengers must wear a DOT-approved helmet and carry a valid trail permit.
Non-riding activities center on Chief Logan State Park, which has about 18 miles of hiking trails, a swimming pool with a water slide, mini-golf, a stocked lake, and a museum covering local and coal-mining history. The Liz Spurlock Amphitheater hosts concerts and outdoor theater in summer.

Southern West Virginia has a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and cool to cold winters. Summer and fall are the busiest windows for the trail system and surrounding ATV-friendly towns, with fall bringing peak foliage across the Appalachian ridges. Weekends during the Hatfield-McCoy open season fill quickly, and major trail events push local lodging to capacity.
Spring is a shoulder season. Rhododendrons bloom, waterfalls run high, and daytime temperatures are comfortable, but heavy rains can leave trails muddy and can flood low-lying creek-side campsites. Layered clothing is recommended, since mountain temperatures shift quickly between sun and shade.
Winter is the quietest period. Chief Logan State Park's campground stays open year-round, but many private trail-side resorts scale back operations. Logan averages roughly 15 to 19 inches of snowfall per year, generally lighter than the higher elevations to the east.
How to book campgrounds near Logan
Chief Logan State Park reservations are handled through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system, online or by phone, with sites bookable up to 12 months in advance. The park requires a two-night minimum for Friday and Saturday weekend stays and allows one-night stays Sunday through Thursday. All 26 sites have water and electric hookups; 14 sites add sewer, and 19 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers in the 30 to 40 foot range.
Private trail-side campgrounds such as Rockhouse RV Park, Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC, Paradise Island of Christian, WV, and Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort book direct through the operator by phone or their own website. Reserve well ahead for summer weekends, holidays, and dates tied to trail events. Riders also need a Hatfield-McCoy trail permit for every person on the machine, sold online and at many local retailers.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Logan is steep, narrow, and heavily forested. Access roads to trailheads and campgrounds often follow creek bottoms with tight turns and limited pull-offs, so larger RVs should confirm site length, low branches, and turnaround space with the campground before arrival. Cell service is generally usable at Chief Logan State Park for major carriers but drops off quickly in the surrounding hollows.
Expect a strong ATV and side-by-side culture. Many private campgrounds allow permitted machines to ride from the site to the trail system, and ATV-friendly towns along the way permit road use for machines displaying valid trail permits. Trail riding is limited to daylight hours, and overnight camping on the trails themselves is not allowed. Flash flooding after heavy rain is a known regional hazard, and creek-side sites can be affected during severe storms.

Many rigs feature TVs, Bluetooth stereos, solar panels, or onboard generators, great for boondocking near Hatfield-McCoy trailheads where hookups can be limited. Drop-off mirrors pickup (clean, refueled, tanks emptied at the campground dump). Mileage and generator policies are set by each host, so review the listing details and message the host with any questions before booking. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you're heading to the trail-country boondock sites.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Logan%2C%20West%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a supported credit or debit card, never directly to the host. At booking you're charged a portion upfront, with the balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount varies by RV) and released after your trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape. To avoid issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits in the listing, and return it cleaned with tanks emptied. Pro tip: do a quick photo walk-around with your host at handover, it takes 5 minutes and keeps everyone on the same page.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Logan WV RV rental across state lines?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate travel, making Logan a great base for a multi-state Appalachian RV adventure. Kentucky is just 25 miles west via US-119, Virginia is about 70 miles southeast through the Breaks region, and Ohio sits about 90 miles north past Huntington. Always confirm cross-border travel with your host before booking by messaging directly from the listing, it's a quick conversation that prevents surprises. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limitations. Pro tip: a Logan to Breaks Interstate Park to Cumberland Gap loop is one of the most underrated multi-state Appalachian RV road trips out there.
