Camping near Madison, West Virginia
Madison sits in southern West Virginia's Boone County, roughly 40 minutes south of Charleston on Corridor G (U.S. 119). The town lies in the Little Coal River valley and functions as a supply stop for RV travelers heading into the southern coalfields and the Hatfield-McCoy Trail region.
Campground options within an easy drive lean in two directions. To the north and immediately around town, Little Coal River Campground and Cabin and Paradise Island of Christian, WV provide riverfront and creekside sites suited to families and quieter stays. To the south, Chief Logan State Park near Logan offers a full-service public campground inside a wooded state park, while Rockhouse RV Park in Man and Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins near Gilbert cater directly to ATV and side-by-side riders using the Hatfield-McCoy trail systems.
Most travelers use Madison as a base for outdoor recreation rather than a destination in itself. Grocery, fuel, and hardware are available in town, which is useful because services thin out as roads climb into Logan and Mingo counties.
Things to do around Madison
The dominant draw is the Hatfield-McCoy Trails system. Rockhouse, one of the three original HMT systems, offers over 100 miles of trails at all difficulty levels and connects to the Devil Anse and Buffalo Mountain systems for a combined network of over 300 miles. Riders reach it easily from Rockhouse RV Park in Man or Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins near Gilbert, both of which provide direct trail access without trailering.
Chief Logan State Park adds non-motorized options: about 18 miles of hiking trails, an outdoor pool with a water slide, a wildlife exhibit, and a stocked fishing pond. The park's museum hosts rotating exhibits, and the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater offers concerts and outdoor theater performances during summer. The park also stages an annual drive-through Christmas light display in December.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel in this part of West Virginia. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower than midsummer, and fall color across the Appalachian hardwoods typically peaks in mid- to late October. Trail traffic on the Hatfield-McCoy systems is heaviest on weekends from spring through fall, and lodging along the trail corridor books well in advance around National Trailfest and other rally events.
Summers are warm and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Creek-side sites in the region can flood during heavy rain, so travelers in low-lying spots should check forecasts and site drainage. The pool at Chief Logan State Park operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Winter operations vary. Rockhouse RV Park stays open year-round and offers seasonal long-term rates from November through February, while Chief Logan State Park's campground is generally open March through November. Smaller private parks may close or reduce services in the coldest months, so travelers should confirm directly before arrival.
Booking and reservations near Madison
Chief Logan State Park uses the West Virginia State Parks reservation system, which accepts online, phone, or in-person bookings. Reservations can be booked up to 12 months in advance, and a minimum of two consecutive nights applies on Friday and Saturday weekends, with one-night stays allowed Sunday through Thursday. The campground has 26 sites, 14 with full hookups and 12 with electric and water, so full-hookup inventory is limited on peak weekends.
Private parks in the trail corridor book directly. Rockhouse RV Park lists 12 RV sites with 50/30/20 amp service, water, and PSD sewer, and posts a two-night minimum Sunday through Wednesday and three-night minimum Thursday through Saturday. RVs at Rockhouse must be self-contained, as there are no restroom facilities on site. Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins near Gilbert takes reservations by phone and through its website and offers full-hookup mountaintop sites, primitive sites, and 11 cabins.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in southern West Virginia is steep and folded, and access roads to trail-side and mountaintop campgrounds can be narrow, winding, and steep. Twin Hollow separates check-in and check-out times by several hours to reduce the chance of large rigs meeting on the driveway. Rockhouse RV Park is a gravel lot laid out for big rigs, with back-in sites sized to hold one RV, one vehicle, and an ATV trailer.
Cell coverage is patchy in hollows and on ridges. Many trails are in areas with little or no cell service, so plan navigation before losing signal. In ATV-friendly towns like Gilbert, riders can legally travel town roads from daylight to dark, and until 11 p.m. inside Gilbert town limits, so expect trail traffic mixing with vehicles near trailheads.
