Campgrounds near Mill Creek, West Virginia
Mill Creek sits in Randolph County in the Tygart Valley, roughly 20 miles south of Elkins on US-219. The town is one of the closest communities to the Monongahela National Forest, and it also serves as a natural base for Kumbrabow State Forest in Randolph County, West Virginia's highest forest, with 9,474 acres at an elevation of more than 3,000 feet above sea level.
Options close to town include Saylwinds Campground, West Virginia and Pegasus Farm Campground for travelers who want a private site with easier road access. Smoked Bottom Campground and Boyer Station Campground extend the range east and south into the Allegheny Highlands, while East Fork Campground and Horse Stables caters to riders traveling with horse trailers.
Elevations in the surrounding area climb quickly. The 9,474 acres of Kumbrabow range from 3,000 to 3,930 feet above sea level, making it the state's highest forest. RV renters should expect winding, narrow forest roads on the approach to backcountry sites.
Things to do near Mill Creek
The Monongahela National Forest dominates recreation in this corner of West Virginia, with hundreds of miles of trails, trout streams, overlooks, and dispersed camping options across the Allegheny Highlands.
Anglers head to Mill Creek itself inside Kumbrabow State Forest. Mill Creek is a favorite fishing spot because it is full of native brook trout, though fishing is only allowed on a catch and release basis. Hikers can climb the 2-mile Potato Hole Trail to the top of Rich Mountain and an overlook with a fantastic view, or ride the Mill Ridge Fire Trail on mountain bikes.
For a day off the trail, the Cass Scenic Railroad's steam-locomotive climb to Bald Knob and the Green Bank Observatory are popular family stops. Snowshoe Mountain Resort, about 45 minutes south, adds skiing in winter and a lift-served bike park in summer.

Mill Creek follows a classic Allegheny mountain calendar. Summers are generally mild at elevation while winters can be harsh with heavy snowfall on the ridges, and fall foliage typically peaks in October across Randolph County.
State-forest camping is strictly seasonal. Kumbrabow's Mill Creek Campground is open mid-April through the first week of December, and campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office. West Virginia State Park campground reservations are available from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year, and campgrounds are open on a first-come, first-serve basis after Labor Day.
Weather can shift quickly at elevation. Campers should be prepared for sudden temperature swings, rain, and even off-season snow, and should always check the forecast before heading out. Many national forest campgrounds close or shut off water after the first hard freeze.
Booking and reservations
Reservation systems in this area split by land manager. Monongahela National Forest sites are booked through Recreation.gov, and reservations typically open several months in advance, so peak-season visitors should check individual facility pages for exact windows and book as early as possible.
West Virginia State Parks and Forests, including Kumbrabow, use the state park reservation portal. Campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone or at the campground office, with reservations for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or one night Sunday through Thursday. There is a 14-night maximum stay.
Private campgrounds such as Saylwinds Campground, West Virginia, Pegasus Farm Campground, Smoked Bottom Campground, and Boyer Station Campground book directly through the operator or a marketplace listing. East Fork Campground and Horse Stables is worth calling ahead if traveling with animals.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural, mountainous camping. The remote location means limited modern amenities and no cell coverage or Wi-Fi at many sites, so download maps before leaving pavement.
Many campgrounds are primitive. Kumbrabow's Mill Creek Campground offers 13 primitive sites and one large RV site in pristine settings near patches of rhododendron and a native brook trout stream, sites include a fire pit and picnic tables, and firewood can be purchased at the campground or office. No hookups of any kind are available at Kumbrabow, so plan tank capacity accordingly.
Road access matters for larger rigs. The road into the forest is paved but presents jagged turns and an increase in elevation, so those maneuvering big rigs should exercise extreme caution on the four-mile approach. Restock groceries and fuel in Elkins or Buckhannon before turning off the highway.
