The surrounding Appalachian ridges put RV travelers within a short drive of both a full-service state park and multiple private resorts built around the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System.
Chief Logan State Park is located four miles north of Logan in the heart of West Virginia's southern coalfields, and is the closest developed campground. The campground offers 26 units, 14 of which have full water, sewage and electric hookups, 12 have electric and water only. Hot showers are available at a centrally located bathhouse. The park also has hiking trails, a swimming pool, and a museum.
Private options oriented toward off-road riders cluster around the Rockhouse and Devil Anse trailheads. Rockhouse RV Park, Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC, Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort, and Trails 2 Paradise all cater to visitors bringing side-by-sides or ATVs, with direct or near-direct trail access from the sites.
Things to do near Mount Gay-Shamrock

Non-riders have options too. Chief Logan features a swimming pool with a water slide, an outdoor amphitheater, Museum in the Park, hiking trails, multiple picnic shelters, and fishing. Chief Logan State Park's campground is open March through November. Private ATV-oriented resorts near the Rockhouse and Devil Anse systems generally stay open year-round, since the Hatfield-McCoy trails operate daily from sunrise to sunset in all seasons.
Late spring through early fall brings the busiest window. Weekends around major Hatfield-McCoy events and holiday weekends fill trailside sites well in advance, and Chief Logan requires a minimum of two consecutive nights on weekends (Fri. and Sat.) or one night (Sun.-Thurs.) for reservations. October is popular for fall color rides across the Guyandotte ridges.
Winter riding is possible but variable. Trails can be muddy after rain and icy on shaded north-facing sections, and some private campgrounds reduce services or close bathhouses during the coldest weeks. Heavy rain events, particularly in late winter and spring, occasionally cause creek flooding in low-lying campsites, so checking with the campground before arrival is worthwhile.
How to book campgrounds near Mount Gay-Shamrock
Chief Logan State Park uses the West Virginia State Parks reservation system. All sites are currently reservable, and reservations can be booked up to 12 months in advance. Bookings can be made online through the WV State Parks website, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations require a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, or one night Sunday through Thursday.
Private campgrounds around the Rockhouse and Devil Anse trailheads, including Rockhouse RV Park, Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC, Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort, and Trails 2 Paradise, generally take bookings directly by phone, through their websites, or via third-party platforms.
ATV and UTV riders also need a separate Hatfield-McCoy trail permit for every rider and passenger. Permits can be purchased at any Hatfield-McCoy Trailhead facility including Rockhouse and Devil Anse, at the HMT Welcome Center, or at one of over 180 authorized permit vendor locations. Permits can also be ordered online, though shipping takes several business days.
What to expect near Mount Gay-Shamrock
Terrain is Appalachian: narrow valleys, steep ridges, and winding two-lane approach roads. RV drivers pulling long trailers should scout the final miles into any trailside resort, as some access roads are tight and grade-heavy. Chief Logan Campground sits at an elevation of 681 feet with level sites, but the internal connector road up to the lodge is steep and curvy.
Expect coal-country character. Active rail lines run through the valleys, and it is common to hear coal trains during the day and night. Cell coverage varies by carrier and drops out in the hollows.
Hookup levels vary. Chief Logan has 14 sites with full hookups (electric, water and sewer) and 12 sites with electric and water hookups, plus a dump station on premises. 19 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 30 and 40 feet. Private ATV resorts typically offer full hookups, bathhouses, and wash bays for muddy machines, but always confirm rig-length limits and 50-amp availability when booking.
