Campgrounds and RV parks near Philippi, WV

History is the anchor. The Philippi Covered Bridge was the site of the first land battle of the Civil War on June 3, 1861, and Union troops used the bridge as a barracks after the engagement. Civil War Trails signs guide a walking tour of the battlefield area, and the Barbour County Historical Museum displays Civil War artifacts and materials tied to James Hanger, the Confederate private whose battlefield amputation here led him to design a modern articulating prosthetic leg. Outdoors, Audra State Park draws visitors to the Middle Fork River for swimming in clear pools, whitewater paddling, the Alum Cave Trail, and shaded hiking. Tygart Lake offers boating, fishing, swimming, and a marina with pontoon and fishing boat rentals. The Covered Bridge Route through Mountaineer Country connects several historic bridges within a short drive.

The practical camping season in this part of West Virginia runs from mid-April through October. Audra State Park's campground is open April through October, with online reservations accepted only for arrivals between Memorial Day and Labor Day; the shoulder months are first-come, first-served. Tygart Lake State Park runs on a similar spring-through-fall schedule and accepts reservations anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office, with a two-night minimum on Fridays and Saturdays and a one-night minimum Sunday through Thursday. Summer is the busiest window. Riverside sites at Audra and lake-view sites at Tygart fill quickly on weekends and holidays, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through the warm months. Fall brings peak leaf color across the Allegheny foothills, cooler nights, and lighter crowds. Winter closes most campgrounds in the region; snow accumulates in the higher elevations nearby, and park facilities such as bathhouses and camp stores shut down until spring.

Sites in this area lean rustic. Audra State Park has 67 wooded sites along the Middle Fork River; 13 offer 30-amp electric hookups, and there are no full-hookup sites. A dump station, laundry, hot showers, and a camp store are on site. Tygart Lake State Park has 36 sites, with 10 offering 50-amp electric and water; the remaining 26 are standard sites and no full-hookup sites are available. A dump station sits near the beach area, and larger rigs should confirm site length at booking since many pads are short and sloped. Cell service is spotty in the river valleys, though the Tygart Lake campground picks up Wi-Fi at most sites. Roads in are winding and narrow in spots, so drivers of larger rigs should plan the approach carefully.
