Campgrounds near Rainelle, West Virginia
Rainelle sits in Greenbrier County along US-60, roughly a 30-minute drive from the southern edge of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and about the same to Babcock State Park. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the New River Gorge region, Summersville Lake, and the Gauley River corridor, with grocery stops, fuel, and highway access on US-60 and I-64.
Campground options in the surrounding area range from developed state park sites with electric hookups to primitive first-come, first-served national park sites and private RV parks with full hookups. Babcock State Park operates a 52-site campground with electric and non-electric loops. War Ridge/Backus Mountain sits on a ridge inside New River Gorge National Park with dry, primitive sites. Summersville Lake Retreat & Lighthouse offers full-hookup pull-throughs and cabins near West Virginia's largest lake.
Summer Wind RV Overnight Park is a straightforward option for travelers who need a quick overnight stop before continuing deeper into the gorge or up to Summersville.
Things to do near Rainelle
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is the main draw, with hiking, rock climbing, rim overlooks, and whitewater rafting on the New River. Babcock State Park adds the often-photographed Glade Creek Grist Mill, hiking trails, and boat rentals on Boley Lake.
Summersville Lake, about an hour north, is a clear-water reservoir popular for kayaking, swimming, cliff jumping, and scuba diving. The lake sits next to the Gauley River National Recreation Area, where controlled dam releases each fall produce world-class Class IV and V whitewater.
Families staying near Rainelle can combine easier activities like a grist mill visit, a lighthouse climb at Summersville Lake, or an overlook drive at Grandview with harder adventures like a guided raft trip or a hike down into the gorge. Fayetteville, 30 to 40 minutes north, has outfitters, restaurants, and gear shops.

The main camping season in this part of West Virginia runs roughly mid-April through late October. Babcock State Park's campground opens the third Friday in April and closes the fourth Monday in October, weather permitting. Summersville Lake Retreat's tent sites are seasonal, while its full-hookup RV sites and cabins operate on a longer schedule. War Ridge/Backus Mountain stays open year round.
Fall is the marquee season. Gauley Season begins the Friday after Labor Day, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers starts scheduled releases from Summersville Dam that continue across six to seven weekends into mid or late October. Peak fall color typically lands in mid-October and overlaps with Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge, so campgrounds fill weeks or months in advance.
Summer brings warm days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and the busiest general camping demand. Winter is cold and often snowy, and most seasonal parks are closed, though War Ridge/Backus Mountain and select private RV parks remain open for self-contained rigs.
How to book campgrounds near Rainelle
Babcock State Park campsites are reserved through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system online, by phone, or at the park headquarters office. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, with single nights allowed Sunday through Thursday.
War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground inside New River Gorge National Park does not accept reservations. All sites are first-come, first-served, and the stay limit is 14 days across park campgrounds. Only rigs under 25 feet are recommended due to tight turns on the access road.
Private options such as Summersville Lake Retreat & Lighthouse and Summer Wind RV Overnight Park take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. For any fall trip that overlaps Gauley releases or peak foliage, book as early as possible, since sites fill many weeks out.
What to expect
Terrain in this part of West Virginia is steep and forested. Access roads to national park campgrounds can be narrow gravel with tight turns, which is why the Park Service caps recommended RV length at 25 feet for War Ridge/Backus Mountain. Larger rigs are better suited to Babcock State Park's electric loop or private parks like Summersville Lake Retreat, which has pull-through sites sized for modern motorhomes.
Hookup levels vary widely. Babcock has electric at 28 sites but no individual water or sewer hookups at the site, with water fill and dump stations in the campground. War Ridge is fully primitive with a single toilet and no potable water. Private RV parks near Summersville Lake offer full hookups and Wi-Fi.
Black bears are active from spring through fall across the region, so food, trash, and toiletries should be stored inside the RV or in a bear-resistant container, never in a tent. Cell service is spotty in the gorge.
