Camping near Ravenswood, West Virginia
Ravenswood sits along the Great Bend of the Ohio River in Jackson County, roughly halfway between Charleston and Parkersburg off I-77 and US Route 33. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Mid-Ohio Valley, with several campgrounds within easy driving distance on both the West Virginia and Ohio sides of the river.
On the West Virginia side, Statts Mills RV Park lies inland toward Ripley, while Carthage Gap Campground and American Way RV Park offer additional hookup sites within the region. Across the Ohio River, Forked Run State Park anchors the public-land options with a large campground on Forked Run Lake, and Kountry Resort Campground in Racine provides a full-service private resort about three miles from the state line.
The mix covers most trip styles: state-park camping with rustic sites and lake access, a private resort with an indoor pool and pull-throughs for larger rigs, and smaller RV parks suited to overnight stops along the river corridor.
Things to do around Ravenswood
Washington's Riverfront Park anchors downtown Ravenswood with river views, picnic areas, and the Great Bend Museum, housed in the former Lock 22 powerhouse. The Sayre Cabin next door is set up in the manner of an 1800s homestead, and a nearby marker notes where Meriwether Lewis camped in September 1803 on his way down the Ohio to meet William Clark.
The Ohio River itself drives most outdoor activity: shore and boat fishing, paddling, and boating from public ramps on both banks. Across the river, Forked Run State Park adds a 102-acre lake with a swimming beach, hiking trails, boat rentals, and stocked fishing for crappie, bass, bluegill, and catfish.
Day trips reach Marietta and Pomeroy to the north and Buffington Island for Civil War history.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May is the wettest month of the year, with rainfall averaging around four inches, so early-season travelers should expect soft ground and lake levels running high. June through August is peak family season, with warm humid days, longer evenings, and steady demand at private resorts along the river.
September is typically the driest month and pairs mild days with cool nights, making it a strong choice for RVers who want quieter campgrounds. October adds fall color across the Ohio Valley hardwoods but shortens daylight quickly.
Winters are cold and often cloudy. Across the river at Forked Run State Park, off-peak operations run from November 1 through April 1, with only Area 1 open and the Area 1 showerhouse closed during the coldest weeks of winter. Private parks vary, so confirm winter hookups and water service directly with the campground.
How to book a campground near Ravenswood
Forked Run State Park uses the Ohio State Parks reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance online or by calling 866-644-6727, and popular summer weekends fill early. The campground has 143 sites in five camping areas, a mix of electric and non-electric, with camper cabins also available for nightly rental.
Kountry Resort Campground takes reservations directly through its own website and accommodates rigs up to 40 feet with full, water-electric, or electric-only hookups on 20/30/50-amp service. Check-in is 3:00 PM and check-out is noon for RV and tent sites.
Statts Mills RV Park, Carthage Gap Campground, and American Way RV Park are smaller operations; call ahead to confirm site size, hookups, and availability, especially during holiday periods.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Ravenswood is hilly and wooded, and campgrounds vary widely in how level their pads are. Forked Run has vault latrines in parts of the campground and modern shower facilities in other loops, and cellular service inside the campground is poor, though Wi-Fi is available at the camp office.
Kountry Resort leans toward family amenities: an indoor pool, fitness and game rooms, four stocked fishing lakes, a playground, and a camp store. The park hosts a mix of overnight travelers, seasonal campers, and long-term residents.
Bring leveling blocks, a freshwater hose long enough to reach shared fill stations, and bug spray for summer stays near the river. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning access before booking, particularly at state-park loops and smaller RV parks.
