Campgrounds near Richwood, West Virginia
Richwood sits in Nicholas County on the western edge of the Monongahela National Forest, a national forest that covers more than 900,000 acres of the Allegheny Mountains and protects a large share of West Virginia's native trout streams. The town serves as the headquarters of the Gauley Ranger District and marks the western terminus of the Highland Scenic Highway, a National Scenic Byway that climbs toward Cranberry Mountain.
RV travelers use Richwood as a base for two distinct camping areas. To the west, Summersville Lake and its long, cliff-lined shoreline anchor full-hookup private grounds such as Mountain Lake Campground and Cabins and Summersville Lake Retreat & Lighthouse, plus U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites around the lake. To the east and north, national forest campgrounds line the Cranberry and Williams Rivers, and Riverside - Watoga State Park sits along the Greenbrier River in neighboring Pocahontas County.
Additional nearby options include Camp Holly and Mountain Top RV Park and Cabins. Elevations in the surrounding forest run between roughly 2,000 and 4,500 feet, which keeps summer nights cool and shortens the shoulder season.
Things to do near Richwood
Water dominates the itinerary. Summersville Lake is West Virginia's largest lake and is known for a cliff-lined shoreline, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, scuba diving, and rock climbing on hundreds of established sandstone routes. Below the dam, the Gauley River delivers Class III to Class V whitewater during fall dam releases from Summersville Dam.
On land, the Highland Scenic Highway climbs to overlooks along the ridge between Richwood and the Cranberry Mountain area. Hikers head to the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area and the Cranberry Wilderness, while anglers target trout on the Cranberry, Williams, and Greenbrier rivers. The Greenbrier River Trail, a long rail-trail popular for biking, is accessible from Watoga State Park.
Families staying at Mountain Lake Campground and Cabins can use on-site amenities, and the replica lighthouse at Summersville Lake Retreat & Lighthouse is a landmark for kids.

The main camping window runs from mid-spring through late fall. Most Summersville-area campgrounds operate seasonally, generally from April or May through October. Riverside Campground at Watoga State Park has 50 sites and is open from April 1 to October 31, with reservations available online, by phone, or at the campground office.
Summer brings the most reliable weather and the highest demand. Elevations in the surrounding mountains keep daytime highs moderate and nights cool, which appeals to families escaping lowland heat. May is the wettest month, with rain falling for about 23 days and totaling roughly 4.49 inches, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through August.
Fall is a signature season. For seven weekends each September and October, controlled releases from Summersville Dam power the Gauley River, packing lodging around Summersville and Richwood. Leaf color typically peaks in mid-October along the Highland Scenic Highway. Winters are cold and snowy at elevation, and most developed campgrounds close, though some private parks stay open with limited services.
How to book
National forest sites in the Monongahela, including the developed campgrounds north and east of Richwood, are booked through Recreation.gov. Most campgrounds have a six-month booking window, though the length of the window can vary by location, and popular sites near the Cranberry and Williams rivers fill early for summer weekends and Gauley Season.
Watoga State Park handles Riverside Campground reservations online, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or one night (Sunday through Thursday), and there is a 14-night maximum stay.
Private parks such as Mountain Lake Campground and Cabins, Summersville Lake Retreat & Lighthouse, Camp Holly, and Mountain Top RV Park and Cabins book directly through their own websites. Army Corps sites at Summersville Lake also use Recreation.gov. For Gauley release weekends, book several months in advance.
What to expect
Hookups vary widely. Private parks around Summersville Lake typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, and laundry. Forest Service and state park sites lean rustic: Riverside at Watoga has 50 sites, 38 with electrical hookups, plus two bathhouses, laundry, water collection points, and a dump station, but no water or sewer at the individual site. Many national forest campgrounds have vault toilets and hand-pump or seasonal water only.
Cell phone reception can be spotty in the area, so download offline maps before leaving town. Black bears are present in the Monongahela, so use bear-resistant storage and clean up food.
Mountain roads are narrow and winding. Large rigs should route carefully into forest campgrounds on the Cranberry and Williams rivers, where access roads may be gravel.
