Campgrounds near Ripley, West Virginia
Ripley sits in Jackson County in western West Virginia, just off Interstate 77 in the rolling Appalachian foothills between Charleston and Parkersburg. The town works well as a base for RV travelers, with several campgrounds within a short drive and easy interstate access for larger rigs.
Statts Mills RV Park is the closest option, set on the shores of the 217-acre Lake O'Brien about ten minutes from downtown Ripley, with full-hookup RV sites, tent areas, and cabins. Across the Ohio River, Forked Run State Park offers a large public campground with electric and non-electric sites, a 102-acre lake, and a swimming beach. Kountry Resort Campground in Racine, Ohio adds a family-focused resort with a pool and multiple stocked lakes.
Charles Fork Lake, operated by the City of Spencer to the east, provides a quieter lakeside option with electric and non-electric sites. Farther southwest, Mothman Festival Campground in Point Pleasant serves visitors coming for the Ohio River town's annual September festival.
Things to do around Ripley
Water recreation anchors most trips. Forked Run State Park has a sand swimming beach, boat rentals, and a 102-acre lake stocked with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, with a ten-horsepower motor limit that keeps the water calm. Charles Fork Lake draws paddlers, anglers targeting walleye, musky, and bass, and mountain bikers using its 1,600 acres of surrounding land and 21 miles of trails.
On the Ripley side, Statts Mills sits next to a county boat launch on Lake O'Brien, with fishing, mountain biking, and a playground on site. Day trips include the Staats Mill Covered Bridge at Cedar Lakes Conference Center, the Mothman Museum and statue in Point Pleasant, and Marietta, Ohio's riverfront history sites about an hour north.

The core RV season runs from late April through October. Summer brings warm, humid days with highs in the mid-80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms; June is typically the wettest month, so expect muddy sites and swollen creeks after heavy rain. July and August are peak family-camping months, and reservable state park sites at Forked Run can fill on holiday weekends.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April and May, and September and October bring cooler nights and hardwood color across the ridges. The Mothman Festival draws large crowds to Point Pleasant on the third weekend of September, and lodging and campsites in Mason County book out well in advance for those dates.
Winters are cold but generally short. Many private parks stay open year-round with reduced services, while Forked Run limits camping to Area 1 from November through early April, and the Area 1 showerhouse closes from early December through April.
How to book
Ohio state park sites at Forked Run are reserved through the state's central reservation system online or by phone, up to six months ahead. Reservations must be made at least one day before arrival, and walk-ups can still choose from available sites at the campground office. Area 1 is the only loop open in the off-peak window from November 1 through April 1.
Private parks around Ripley, including Statts Mills RV Park and Kountry Resort Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Charles Fork Lake is managed by the City of Spencer and operates on a mix of first-come, first-served and direct reservation. For Mothman Festival weekend in September, book campsites in Mason County several months out.
What to expect
Terrain around Ripley is hilly. Access roads off Interstate 77 are paved but narrow and curvy in places, with some steep grades on the approach to Statts Mills, so drivers of larger rigs should take the road slowly. Sites at both Statts Mills and Forked Run can be uneven; leveling blocks are worth having on hand.
Hookups vary. Private parks near Ripley typically offer 30 and 50 amp service with water and sewer, while Forked Run has a mix of electric and non-electric sites with a central dump station and no individual sewer hookups. Cell service is patchy in the surrounding hollows, and Wi-Fi at public campgrounds is limited to areas near the entrance.
Expect deer, wild turkey, and mosquitoes in summer. Pets are allowed at most parks but restricted to designated sites at Forked Run.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Ripley RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any West Virginia RV trip, so plan ahead. Class C motorhomes around Ripley typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 mpg), and campervans can hit 15 to 20 mpg. West Virginia gas prices usually run close to or slightly below the national average, and the Sheetz and GoMart stations along I-77 near Ripley are convenient for fill-ups, with Sheetz pumps that accommodate larger rigs. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop in a Class C, expect roughly $130 to $200 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Ripley before heading to remote areas like Monongahela National Forest where stations get sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ripley?
For private campgrounds like Statts Mills RV Park and Rippling Waters, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty, except around the 4th of July and the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair at Cedar Lakes (typically early July), when you'll want 2 to 3 months of lead time. For West Virginia State Parks like North Bend, book through the official reservation portal at wvstateparks.com, where reservations open well in advance for popular sites. Fall foliage weekends in September and October also book up fast. Pro tip: midweek arrivals are almost always available last-minute, even in peak season.
wvstateparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Ripley?
Driving around Ripley is refreshingly stress-free for an Appalachian town. Interstate 77 runs straight through with wide lanes, and the local network of US-33 and WV-21 features rolling hills rather than steep mountain passes, making it very RV-friendly. Watch for occasional fog in the river valleys at dawn, deer at dusk (especially in fall), and quick-moving summer thunderstorms. Use caution on narrow secondary roads in winter if there's snow or ice. Pro tip: download offline maps before heading into the hollows around Jackson and Roane counties, where cell service can disappear for a few miles. Most main routes have solid AT&T and Verizon coverage.
