Campgrounds and RV parks near Rivesville, WV

Water recreation is a main draw. Tygart Lake has deep, calm water and is stocked with walleye, catfish, bluegill, bass, crappie, and smallmouth bass, with more than 30 miles of accessible shoreline for bank fishing. Boating, kayaking, and swimming from the designated beach are all popular in the warmer months. Hikers can pick up the park's trail network. Tygart Lake State Park has five distinct trails that range from easy strolls to more challenging climbs, following the shoreline and linking picnic areas and campsites. The Tygart Valley River is a well-known regional paddling run. Off the water, families can browse downtown Fairmont, tour Prickett's Fort State Park, or drive north to Morgantown for the West Virginia University campus, shopping, and restaurants.

The camping season in north-central West Virginia runs primarily from spring through fall. Tygart Lake State Park's campground typically operates from mid-April through October, and several private parks in the area follow a similar pattern, though Indian Meadows Campground and Sand Springs Campground both list year-round availability. Deep-winter operations are limited at most sites. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest conditions of the year, with frequent thunderstorms and full green canopies. May is the wettest month at the nearest climate station, with rain on roughly 20 days and about 4.2 inches of precipitation, so RVers should plan for muddy sites and pack rain gear. Summer weekends are peak season for the state park, and reserving early is important for holiday periods. Fall is a strong choice for RV travel. Daytime highs settle into the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, humidity drops, and hardwood foliage across the Alleghenies typically peaks in October. Winter brings cold, cloudy weather with regular snow, and most campgrounds are closed or offer only limited services.

Terrain in this part of West Virginia is hilly and wooded. Access roads into the campgrounds can be narrow with tight turns, and some sites sit on sloped ground. Tygart Lake State Park's campground has 36 sites, and camping units are generally recommended to be less than 32 feet in length due to the tight turns within the loop; larger rigs should call ahead about site suitability. Hookups are limited at the state park. Ten sites offer 50-amp electric and water hookups, and 26 are standard sites, with a dump station near the beach area and no full-hookup sites available. Private parks in the Fairmont and Morgantown area generally offer 30- and 50-amp service and full hookups on at least some sites, along with pull-through options. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Fairmont and thins out in the hollows. Bring insect repellent, and expect raccoons and other wildlife around campsites.
