Camping near Star City, West Virginia
Star City sits on the Monongahela River just northwest of Morgantown in north-central West Virginia, immediately adjacent to West Virginia University and the region's largest cluster of trailheads, river access points, and outfitters. RV travelers use the town as a base for the Mon River Rail-Trail, Cheat Lake, and the sandstone overlooks of Coopers Rock State Forest, located just off I-68 approximately 13 miles from Morgantown, with iconic canyon overlooks, sandstone cliffs for climbing, 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing terrain, trout fishing and nearby whitewater rafting.
Private campgrounds within a short drive include Indian Meadows Campground, Sand Springs Campground, Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC, Fairmont Hills RV Park, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds. Options range from wooded sites to open RV parks with full hookups, so travelers can match the campground to the size of their rig and the length of their stay.
The surrounding terrain is Appalachian: rolling ridges, hardwood forest, and river valleys. Camping spots near Morgantown span from dense forests to lakeside settings within the Allegheny foothills, with elevations creating varied conditions across the seasons.
Things to do around Star City
Outdoor activity is the main draw. Coopers Rock State Forest sits above the Cheat River canyon and supports hiking, fishing, rock climbing, and picnicking, with 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing terrain, trout fishing and nearby whitewater rafting. Cheat Lake, minutes from Star City, is popular for boating, paddling, and shoreline fishing.
Closer to town, the Mon River and Caperton rail-trails run right past Star City for flat, family-friendly cycling along the river. The West Virginia Botanic Garden and Dorsey's Knob Park add easier half-day options. Guided whitewater trips operate on the Cheat River in season, and marked trails at Coopers Rock support cross-country skiing when there is snow.
On game days, WVU football and basketball bring the biggest crowds of the year to nearby Morgantown, and campgrounds book out well in advance.

The camping season in this part of West Virginia is broadly April through November. Most private campgrounds run from spring through fall, with limited winter options. Public campgrounds follow a similar rhythm: the campgrounds are open by the first weekend in April. Rhododendron Campground closes for the season on the first Saturday in November through the end of the year. McCollum Campground remains open until the first Saturday of December, weather permitting.
Spring tends to be the wettest season and fall the driest, so trails can be muddy at higher elevations in spring, though waterfalls run strong and crowds are light. Summer brings warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak demand for riverside and lake sites. Early fall is the sweet spot for RV travel: cool nights, drier weather, and Appalachian color across the ridges.
Winter is cold and snowy at elevation. Most private parks reduce services and state-forest campgrounds close, though day-use trails at Coopers Rock stay open for cross-country skiing when conditions allow.
How to book campgrounds near Star City
For public sites, West Virginia State Parks handles reservations centrally. Campsites may be reserved online at wvstateparks.com or by calling 833-WVPARKS. Reservations must be for at least two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or a single night Sunday through Thursday. Reservations can be made a year in advance, and both campgrounds generally open by the first weekend in April, weather permitting.
Private campgrounds around Star City, including Indian Meadows Campground, Sand Springs Campground, Fairmont Hills RV Park, Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds, are booked directly with each property by phone or its own website. For WVU home football weekends, graduation, and the July 4 week, plan to book two to three months out.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this region tend to be wooded and set on rolling terrain, so leveling blocks are useful. At Coopers Rock, the 25 RV spots that are available for reservations, the sites are reasonably private and wooded, providing electric hook-ups, a picnic table, and fire ring, and central bathhouses that offer hot showers and flush toilets. There is also a water station and dump station for visitors to use during their stay. Rhododendron Campground offers 25 primitive campsites with a picnic table and fire pit included at each one. A central bathroom with flushing toilets and running water is available for campground guests. The campground is open to only tent/hammock camping.
Cell coverage is reliable near Star City and Morgantown but drops in the Cheat River canyon and on back roads. Bears are present in the forest, so store food and trash securely. Leashed pets are generally welcome at both public and private campgrounds in the area.
