Campgrounds and RV parks near Stonewood, WV

Water recreation drives most trips out of Stonewood. Tygart Lake stretches about ten miles in length, with boating, fishing, kayaking, and swimming access from the state park, and the lake is stocked with walleye, catfish, bluegill, bass, crappie, and smallmouth bass. At Audra State Park, the Middle Fork River is the main draw. The park is known for whitewater kayaking, a natural swimming pool carved out of bedrock, and the Alum Cave overhang, with wooden walkways winding beneath the curved stone. A designated swimming area is open between April and October, and locals consider the waters some of the clearest in West Virginia. Hikers have options at both parks. Tygart Lake has five trails ranging from easy strolls to moderately demanding hikes, following the shoreline and linking picnic areas and campsites. Covered-bridge drives and the West Virginia State Wildlife Center near Buckhannon give families a rain-day alternative.

The camping season in this part of West Virginia is short and clearly defined. Tygart Lake State Park campground is open from mid-April through October, weather permitting, and Audra State Park's campground follows a similar spring-through-fall window, typically closing in mid-October and reopening in mid-April. Private parks such as Fairmont Hills RV Park and Oakdale Village generally run longer seasons, so winter and shoulder-season RVers should confirm availability directly. Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm days, lake swimming, and school vacations pull heavy weekend demand at Tygart Lake and Audra, and holiday weekends fill first. Fall brings cooler nights and strong leaf color across the Allegheny foothills, making late September through mid-October a popular window for foliage trips. Spring is wet. May is typically the rainiest month in the Clarksburg area, averaging just over four inches of rain, and grass sites can turn muddy after storms, which matters for larger rigs. Winter drops below freezing regularly, snow is common from November through April, and most state-park campgrounds in the region are closed.

Sites in this region are wooded and hilly. At Tygart Lake, ten electric sites cluster near the entrance with level parking but minimal shade, while the remaining standard sites occupy steeper terrain among trees where finding level ground can be difficult. The stated RV length limit is around 30 feet, and many sites can turn muddy in rainy periods, which is worth considering for larger vehicles. Amenities are basic but functional. A dump station is near the beach area at Tygart Lake, and full-hookup sites are not available. Audra provides two bathhouses with hot showers, a playground, coin-operated laundry, a dump station, and a camp store stocked with supplies, ice, and firewood. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the hollows and along the river, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving Stonewood.
