Campgrounds and RV parks near Summersville, WV

Water recreation drives most trips. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and scuba diving are popular in the clear waters of the state's largest lake, and area outfitters offer kayak and pontoon rentals. Anglers will find largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and catfish, with trout stocked below the dam. Climbers head to the sandstone cliffs ringing the lake and, a short drive south, the New River Gorge. Within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve there are more than 1,400 established rock climbs on hard sandstone cliffs, making it one of the top climbing destinations in the country. Families staying at Babcock State Park can walk to the Glade Creek Grist Mill, a fully functional replica, and hike the Manns Creek Gorge trail that leaves right from the campground. Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, a short drive from town, offers a museum, Gauley River overlooks, and hiking trails.

Camping in the Summersville area runs on a spring-through-fall calendar. Most campgrounds in the Summersville Lake area operate seasonally, typically from April or May through October. Battle Run at Summersville Lake operates approximately May 1 through mid-October, while the Babcock State Park campground opens in mid-April and closes at the end of October, weather permitting. Summer brings the warmest lake temperatures and the biggest family crowds. Independence Day and Labor Day weekends fill sites well in advance. Fall is the marquee whitewater window: Gauley season occurs when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases water from Summersville Dam, and these controlled releases take place across seven weekends each fall, starting the Friday after Labor Day. For the first several weekends, water flows from Friday through Monday, tapering to Saturday and Sunday for the last releases. Lodging around Fayetteville and Summersville fills up during Gauley season. Winter is quiet. Most private and public campgrounds close, and access to lake facilities is limited. Shoulder-season travelers in April and late October should expect cold nights and possible frost.

Terrain is mountainous and roads are winding. Access requires navigating narrow mountain roads that can challenge larger RVs on tight turns, and cell coverage can be inconsistent, though it is stronger near main park facilities. Verify low-clearance and grade information before towing a fifth wheel into any state park loop. Hookups vary widely. Private lakeside parks generally offer full hookups and pull-through sites, while state and federal campgrounds lean toward electric-only or non-electric loops. Battle Run offers 110 electric sites plus primitive walk-to tent sites, with a central water supply, bathhouses, laundry, and a dump station rather than individual water hookups. Babcock's 52-site campground includes 28 electric and 24 non-electric sites, a central bathhouse with coin-operated laundry, water fill stations, and sewage dump facilities. Groceries, fuel, and box stores are available in the town of Summersville. Firewood is typically sold on site; do not transport it across state lines.
