Campgrounds and RV parks near Switzer, WV

Off-road riding is the anchor activity. The Hatfield-McCoy network spans over 1,000 miles across 10 trail systems, and the Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and Buffalo Mountain systems connect to form more than 300 miles of continuous riding. Riders can travel directly from Rockhouse RV Park to the Rockhouse trailhead near Man, and Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC sits along the Devil Anse system. Non-riders have options too. Chief Logan State Park offers a wildlife exhibit, an outdoor pool, walking paths, and a museum with rotating exhibits from the West Virginia State Museum, plus the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater used for summer performances. Fishing on the Guyandotte River and coalfield heritage stops in Matewan add rest-day options for families based at Paradise Island of Christian, WV or Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort.

Spring through fall is the practical RV window. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are open 365 days a year for every skill level, but rider traffic peaks from April through October when temperatures are mild and creek crossings are manageable. Summer weekends see the heaviest bookings at the trail-adjacent RV parks, so sites near Rockhouse RV Park and Devil Anse ATV Resort, LLC tend to fill first. At Chief Logan State Park, the reservation model shifts by season. The park accepts advance reservations for reservable campsites from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, while site rentals are first-come, first-served from Labor Day through Memorial Day, or as established by the superintendent. A park brochure lists the campground as open March through November, while the state parks reservation portal shows it as open all year, so confirming dates by phone before arrival is worthwhile. Winter brings cold rain, occasional snow, and muddy trails. Private ATV-focused parks generally stay open, but expect reduced services and shorter daylight.

Chief Logan State Park is the most developed option in the area. Fourteen sites have full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, and twelve sites have electric and water. The campground has a centrally located bathhouse with hot showers, a picnic table and grill at each site, and a creek running through wooded, level sites. Trail-side private parks are simpler and rider-focused. Expect gravel pads, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer or dump-station service that varies by operator; some smaller lots require self-contained RVs. Cell service in the hollows is spotty, roads are winding, and ATVs are permitted on many local streets in designated ATV-friendly towns such as Man and Gilbert. Fuel up and stock groceries in Man or Logan before heading to the trails.
