Campgrounds and RV parks near Adams, WI

Hiking and rock art are the signature draws at Roche-A-Cri State Park, where a wooden stairway climbs the bluff and about five miles of trails wind through oak and pine forest below. Petroglyphs and pictographs are visible from an accessible viewing platform at the base of the mound. Water recreation dominates around Buckhorn State Park, with a canoe and kayak interpretive trail, a sandy swim beach, an accessible fishing pier, and access to backpack sites by foot trail or boat. Trails traverse woodland, wetlands, prairies, and sand-dune features. Off-park, families use Adams as a base for Wisconsin Dells waterparks and attractions, tubing and paddling on the Wisconsin River from Point Bluff Resort, and ATV and trail access from Pineland Camping Park.

The Wisconsin state-park camping season at Roche-A-Cri runs from late spring to early fall, with a rustic family campground of 41 sites including four with electric hookups. Buckhorn State Park keeps a handful of backpack sites open year-round, but its family loop and electric sites concentrate use between spring and fall. Beginning in 2026, a large road construction project at Buckhorn will affect availability of some campsites, the accessible cabin, the boat landing parking lot, and the boat launch, so verify current closures before booking. Private campgrounds follow a similar pattern, with most operating from spring through early fall. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first at both state and private sites. Fall brings cooler nights, changing foliage, and lower bug pressure, which many campers prefer over midsummer. Winter reduces most operations to backpack camping and day use, with snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing continuing at Buckhorn.

State park sites near Adams are generally wooded and level, with a mix of electric and non-electric options. Roche-A-Cri has 41 rustic campsites with four electric, two walk-in tent sites, one tent-only site, and 33 sites that fit trailers or tents, plus a dump station and vault toilets. Buckhorn has 69 family campsites, 17 standard electric sites, 3 accessible electric sites, 50 cart-in backpack sites, and an accessible cabin, with a shower and toilet building and a dump station near the park office. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for every vehicle entering a state park in addition to campsite fees. Nonresidents pay an additional nightly camping surcharge. Bring bug spray. Mosquitoes and biting flies are noticeable from late spring through late summer, particularly at water-adjacent sites. Only certified firewood or wood sourced within 10 miles of the park may be brought in.
