Campgrounds and RV parks near Cambridge, WI

Lake Ripley is the main draw: swimming from the public beach, paddling, and fishing for bass, panfish, pike and walleye. Personal watercraft are prohibited from sunset to sunrise, which keeps evenings quiet for anglers and paddlers on the water. CamRock County Park stretches 575 acres along Koshkonong Creek between Cambridge and Rockdale, with a 2.4-mile crushed-limestone multi-use trail and over 9 miles of volunteer-built mountain-bike singletrack. A Dane County mountain bike permit is required to ride the singletrack loops. The park has three shelter areas, a canoe and kayak launch, a natural playground near Shelter #2, and a sledding hill near Shelter #3. The Glacial Drumlin State Trail runs west toward Madison and east toward Waukesha on a former rail bed, and downtown Cambridge adds pottery shops, a winery, a distillery and a local brewery within walking distance of the lake.

The Cambridge camping season runs roughly from late April through mid-October. Most private campgrounds in south-central Wisconsin winterize once overnight temperatures drop consistently below freezing, and water hookups, dump stations and beach facilities close first. Ice-over on nearby Madison-area lakes typically arrives in mid-December to early January and thaws in March, which frames the shoulder seasons for lakefront sites. June through August is peak booking season across the region, tied to warm-lake swimming, family reunions and festivals in Madison and the surrounding villages. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day fill first, often several weeks ahead. Fall weekends in late September and early October see a second peak as color arrives in the oak and maple woodlands along Koshkonong Creek. Spring can bring flooding on the Rock River and its tributaries, and thunderstorms with hail are common from May through July. Peak tornado risk in this part of Wisconsin runs June and July, so travellers should keep a NOAA weather radio or phone alerts on in-season.

Terrain around Cambridge is gently rolling drumlin country: farmland, oak savannah, hardwood woodlots and small lakes carved by the last glaciation. Roads into the private campgrounds are generally paved or well-graded gravel and handle trailers and Class A motorhomes without issue, though some interior loops are tight and low-hanging branches are common on wooded sites. Expect humid summer nights, heavy dew, and active mosquito and tick populations from May into September. Cell coverage from major U.S. carriers is reliable throughout the Cambridge, Lake Mills and Fort Atkinson area. Fuel, propane, groceries and hardware are available in Cambridge, Deerfield, Lake Mills and Fort Atkinson, and Madison is roughly 30 minutes west for larger RV service needs. Deer are abundant along rural roads; drive cautiously at dawn and dusk, particularly during the October and November rut.
