Camping near Cottage Grove, Wisconsin
Cottage Grove sits in Dane County just east of Madison, placing RV travelers within a short drive of the Yahara Chain of Lakes and southern Wisconsin's rolling farmland. The village works well as a base for exploring Madison's attractions while camping in quieter surroundings near lakes, prairies, and oak woodlands.
Lake Kegonsa State Park is the closest public campground, set on the northeast shore of a roughly 3,200-acre glacial lake southeast of Madison. The park mixes oak woodland, prairie, and wetlands across about 342 acres and is known for its beach, boat landing, and approximately five miles of hiking trails. Private options in the area include Badgerland Campground, Viking Village Campground, Whistle Stop Campground, and Creekview Campground, which give RV travelers additional layouts, hookup levels, and reservation flexibility.
Most sites suit family RV travel, with a mix of partially and heavily wooded campsites, electrical hookups at select spots, and shared amenities like flush toilets, showers, and a dump station at the state park.
Things to do near Cottage Grove
Water activity centers on Lake Kegonsa, where swimming, sailing, motorboating, water-skiing, and fishing are all permitted. Anglers commonly catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, musky, walleye, and catfish; anyone 16 or older needs a current Wisconsin fishing license. A swimming beach, picnic areas, and a boat launch sit within about a mile of the state park campground.
On land, Lake Kegonsa State Park has roughly five miles of hiking trails, ranging from a short wetland boardwalk with a wildlife viewing platform to a lakeshore path between the beach and boat launch. Geocaching along the White Oak Nature Trail is popular with families, and cross-country ski trails take over the same corridors once snow arrives.
Madison's museums, State Capitol, and restaurants are a short drive west for a rest-day off the campground.

The area has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with average highs in the upper 70s Fahrenheit and frequent thunderstorms. This is peak camping season, and Lake Kegonsa State Park sites, especially those with electric hookups, are booked well in advance for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Spring brings gradual warming, wildflowers, and higher water levels, though snow can linger into March and rain is common. Fall delivers crisp days, vibrant foliage, and fewer crowds; the dump station at Lake Kegonsa may close in early May and late October depending on weather, and showers and flush toilets can close on the same schedule.
Winter is cold and snowy, with temperatures often below freezing and significant snow accumulation possible. The state park campground is open May 1 through October 31, though day-use trails remain available year-round for cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice fishing when conditions allow.

How to book a campsite
Lake Kegonsa State Park is part of the Wisconsin State Park System, and all campsites are reservable through the Wisconsin Going to Camp platform at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Reservations open 11 months in advance of arrival, with new dates released at 9 a.m. Central Time; popular summer weekends and electric sites can fill quickly after release.
Advance reservations booked before May 15 for stays between May 15 and October 31 require a two-night minimum, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is also required for each motor vehicle, purchased daily or as a 12-month pass.
Badgerland Campground, Viking Village Campground, Whistle Stop Campground, and Creekview Campground handle reservations privately through their own websites or phone lines, and often have shorter minimum stays and more last-minute availability than the state park.
What to expect on-site
At Lake Kegonsa State Park, the family campground has 96 sites, 29 of them with electrical hookups. Sites 1-9 and 87-93 are partially wooded, while the remainder are heavily wooded. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water stations, and a dump station between the family and group camps; showers, flush toilets, and the dump station can close in early May and late October depending on conditions.
Group sites are tent-only and do not allow RVs, trailers, or pop-ups. A concessionaire sells firewood on weekends during the camping season and daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fires are limited to fire rings and grills.
Pets are welcome on most trails and roads but not on the swim beach, in buildings, in picnic areas, or on the White Oak Nature Trail. Quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cottage%20Grove%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Cottage Grove?
Great news for first time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cottage Grove, WI. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for RVs longer than 45 feet, and virtually every motorhome and travel trailer listed on RVezy falls well under that length. You'll also need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will confirm your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are ready to roll. Most guests are surprised how simple the process is.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/commercial.aspxWhat protection is included with my Cottage Grove RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Cottage Grove on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one call away whether you have a flat tire on Interstate 94 or need a jump start at your campsite. During checkout you choose your protection level, which covers most physical damage to the RV. Hosts do not pick the coverage tier, you do. Pro tip: review the protection options on the booking page before confirming so you pick the level that matches your comfort and itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Cottage Grove RV trip?
Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to your reservation, and there is a money back grace period right after booking so you have time to confirm plans. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your Cottage Grove RV trip stays on track. You will not see a specific cancellation policy on individual listings because it is standardized across the platform. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Cottage Grove RV rental dates, then use the grace period to finalize campground reservations with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cottage Grove RV rental?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Many hosts offer pet friendly RV rental in Cottage Grove, WI, so use the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see eligible listings. Once you find one, message the host with your dog's size and breed, then confirm any pet cleaning fee. Wisconsin is wonderfully dog-welcoming: Lake Kegonsa State Park has leashed pet areas including a designated pet swim beach, and the nearby Glacial Drumlin State Trail is a crushed limestone path perfect for morning walks with leashed dogs. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and your dog's vaccination records, since some campgrounds ask to see them at check in.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Cottage Grove?
Yes, and it's a game changer for first timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Cottage Grove and across Dane County, meaning the host drives the RV to your campsite, levels it, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Popular delivery destinations include Lake Kegonsa State Park, Babcock County Park in McFarland, and Token Creek County Park north of Madison. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your destination to confirm the fee. Pro tip: delivery is perfect if you're flying into Dane County Regional Airport and don't want to tow.
danecountyparks.com/Parks-and-TrailsHow far can I drive on my Cottage Grove RV rental?
You've got plenty of road ahead. Most RVezy hosts in Cottage Grove include a generous nightly mileage allowance, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Wisconsin RV trip. From Cottage Grove you can reach Wisconsin Dells in about 70 miles, Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo in about 65 miles, Door County in roughly 200 miles, and Chicago in around 150 miles, all comfortably doable. Each listing displays the included miles and the per-mile rate for any overage right on the page. Pro tip: map your route before booking, total your expected miles, and message the host if you'd like to pre-purchase extra miles at a discount.
fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/Where should I camp with my RV near Cottage Grove?
You're surrounded by some of the best campgrounds near Cottage Grove. Top picks include Lake Kegonsa State Park (about 10 miles south, with 80 wooded sites and electric hookups), William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park in Madison (lakefront sites along Lake Waubesa), Babcock County Park in McFarland (a quiet local favorite on the Yahara River), and Jellystone Park at Fort Atkinson (a family resort about 35 miles southeast). For Wisconsin Dells fun, Wisconsin Dells KOA Holiday is just over an hour northwest. Pro tip: state park sites book up to 11 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, so lock in summer weekends early for the smoothest RV camping in Cottage Grove.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/lakekegonsaWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Cottage Grove?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Cottage Grove, with June, July, and August offering warm days in the mid 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and lake-perfect weather. September is the locals' secret: fewer mosquitoes, cooler nights in the 50s, and brilliant autumn color along the Ice Age Trail. Winters here are genuinely cold, with January lows often below 10 degrees Fahrenheit and heavy snow, so most RV rentals operate from April through October. If you crave a fall foliage motorhome rental in Cottage Grove, target the last two weeks of September. Pro tip: book Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends 3 to 6 months ahead.
weather.gov/mkx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, fresh and waste water tanks, slide-outs, generator, and how to level and hook up at a campsite. Many Cottage Grove hosts also send a short video guide ahead of your trip and stay reachable by text throughout. If you'd rather skip driving a big rig, choose a Class B campervan rental in Cottage Grove or book a travel trailer with delivery and setup. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, plan a shorter shakedown trip to Lake Kegonsa State Park, only 15 minutes away, before tackling a longer journey.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rving-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a single phone call connects you with help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues anywhere in Wisconsin. Cottage Grove sits near the junction of Interstates 90 and 94 and Highway 12/18, all heavily patrolled corridors with quick service response times. Your host is also a phone call or message away if you have questions about how something in the RV works. Pro tip: before pulling out of the driveway, save the roadside assistance number to your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have the info handy if you ever need to call.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Cottage Grove RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to road trips across the Midwest, with one important note. Most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel, so a classic RV road trip from Cottage Grove to Minneapolis (270 miles), Chicago (150 miles), Mackinac Island in Michigan (450 miles), or the Black Hills in South Dakota (750 miles) is on the table. Travel to Canada may be allowed but requires the host's written approval and confirmation that insurance covers the crossing, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance won't cover it. Pro tip: bring your passport for Canada-bound trips and confirm your destination with the host in the RVezy app so everyone's on the same page.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cottage Grove RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you might think. Class C motorhomes typically average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches around 6 to 10 mpg, and Class B campervans 15 to 20 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but expect your tow vehicle's mpg to drop 25 to 40 percent. Wisconsin gas prices generally track near the national average and are usually lowest at stations along the Highway 12/18 corridor in Cottage Grove and Monona. For a typical 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app to pinpoint the cheapest pumps along Interstate 90 before each fill up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Cottage Grove?
The earlier the better, especially for state parks. Wisconsin DNR campgrounds, including Lake Kegonsa, Devil's Lake, and Mirror Lake State Parks, open reservations 11 months in advance through Wisconsin's official reservation system at WisconsinStateParks.reserveamerica.com, and prime summer weekends often fill the day they open. County parks in Dane County (like Babcock and Token Creek) and private resorts (such as Jellystone at Fort Atkinson) typically open 6 to 12 months out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your target Friday, log in at 7 a.m. Central, and you'll have the pick of the best lakeside sites at Lake Kegonsa.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Cottage Grove?
Driving here is refreshingly straightforward. Cottage Grove sits on gently rolling glacial terrain just east of Madison with no mountain passes, and Highway 12/18, Interstate 90, and Interstate 94 are wide, well maintained, and RV friendly. You'll want to plan around Madison rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) on the Beltline (US 12/18), and watch for low clearance bridges in downtown Madison, which is why many renters choose RV delivery instead. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan forecast before each leg. Pro tip: leave Cottage Grove by 9 a.m. heading west to dodge Beltline traffic and enjoy a smooth Wisconsin RV trip.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cottage Grove?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds within an hour of Cottage Grove offer 30-amp or 50-amp electric hookups, with private parks like Jellystone Fort Atkinson and Wisconsin Dells KOA providing full hookups (water, sewer, electric). Wisconsin state parks including Lake Kegonsa typically have electric only sites plus shared dump stations and centrally located potable water spigots. Cottage Grove residents and visitors can also use the public RV dump station at the Madison/Yahara Hills area and at most state parks for a small fee. Pro tip: arrive with at least a quarter tank of fresh water and empty waste tanks, then top off at the campground entrance so you're set for the weekend.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Cottage Grove?
More comforts than you'd expect. Most Cottage Grove RV rentals come with a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, dinette seating, air conditioning and a furnace, plus seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking. WiFi varies by listing, so if you need to work on the road, filter for it or bring a mobile hotspot since cell coverage is excellent across Dane County. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and photos so you know exactly what's included, and message the host about anything missing, many will add it for a small fee.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-coverage-mapsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for?
Hosts offer some genuinely useful extras. Common add-ons for a Cottage Grove RV rental include linen and kitchen packages ($50 to $100), bike racks, camp chairs, propane fills, generator hours, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75). Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host and shown on the listing, with most allowing same day morning pickup and late afternoon return. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, ask about RV delivery in Cottage Grove to your campground or home driveway. Mileage policies vary, with some hosts including 100 to 150 free miles per night and others offering unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book to save versus à la carte requests later.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/renting-vacation-homeHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is smooth and transparent. When you book your RV rental in Wisconsin through RVezy, your card is charged securely through the platform, never directly to the host, and you will see the nightly rate, fees, taxes, and protection package itemized before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment to cover any incidentals like missing propane or a needed cleaning, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any surprises, take date stamped photos of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: complete your ID verification in the RVezy app a few days before your trip so check in at the host's Cottage Grove driveway takes just minutes.
