Campgrounds and RV parks near Crivitz, WI

The Peshtigo River is the main draw. The Roaring Rapids section of the Peshtigo, about thirty minutes northwest of town, is the longest stretch of continuous whitewater in the region, and local outfitters run guided trips through it. In spring and early summer, melt water and rainstorms swell flows enough to turn Class II rapids into Class III-IV water, while late spring and summer bring more moderate flows better suited to first-timers. Thornton's Rafting Resort and Campground and Peshtigo River Campground LLC both sit close to the action. Away from the water, Governor Thompson State Park offers hiking trails, a swimming beach on Woods Lake, and boat access to Caldron Falls Flowage for fishing and kayaking. Recreation options include swimming at the beach on Woods Lake, hiking and cross-country skiing trails, and fishing and paddling on both Caldron Falls Flowage and the adjacent Peshtigo River.

The private campgrounds around Crivitz generally run from late spring through early fall, with peak demand from late June through mid-August. Whitewater trips follow the river: outfitters begin running the Peshtigo in April when snowmelt brings high water, while family-friendly summer flows dominate June through August. The minimum age to raft on the Peshtigo River is 9 years old, which shapes when families with younger kids typically visit. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color through the hardwoods along the Peshtigo. Many private resorts wind down after Labor Day, though some keep limited sites and cabins open into October for hunters and leaf watchers. Winter shifts the area toward snowmobiling, ice fishing, and snowshoeing. Governor Thompson State Park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and a Wisconsin state park vehicle admission sticker is required for entry, but most riverside RV parks close their sites and shut off water lines once temperatures drop.

Sites near Crivitz split into two styles. Private riverfront parks like Peshtigo River Campground LLC and Evergreen Park & Campground offer water and electric hookups, camp stores, showers, and on-site tubing or shuttle service. Thornton's Rafting Resort and Campground and Timberline Resort and Campground pair sites with cabins and direct access to guided river trips. Governor Thompson's family campground has 100 sites divided into three loops: the east loop has 30 sites including 16 with electric hookups and two fully accessible sites, the north loop has 30 non-electric sites, and the south loop has 40 non-electric sites, with vault toilets throughout, a centralized flush toilet and shower building, potable water fountains, and a sanitary dump and fill station at the campground entrance. Cell service can be spotty in the state forest, roads narrow as they leave the highway, and ticks are common on wooded trails during warm months, so pack repellent and check nightly.
