Campgrounds near Deerfield: overview
Deerfield sits in eastern Dane County, about 20 miles east of Madison, with quick access to I-94 and US-12/18. The surrounding countryside is rolling farmland and glacial moraine left by the last ice age, with the Yahara chain of lakes immediately to the southwest. RV travelers have a mix of private family campgrounds and one nearby state park to choose from.
The closest private option is Whistle Stop Campground at 114 Whistle St in Marshall, which sits next door to a small amusement park. Badgerland Campground offers hot showers, electric and water sites, a swimming pond, a fishing pond, and two playgrounds. Hickory Hills Campground has long served the Edgerton area, with swimming, fishing, sand volleyball, mini-golf, and rowboats. Creekview Campground sits along Albion Road in Edgerton, and Viking Village Campground occupies a quiet countryside setting outside Stoughton. Just south of Deerfield, Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a variety of recreational activities set along a 3,200-acre lake, with a swimming beach, picnic areas with reservable shelters, and a boat launch within a mile of the campground.
Things to do near Deerfield
Water recreation centers on the Yahara chain. Lake Kegonsa offers a variety of recreational activities set along a 3,200-acre lake, with excellent fishing and hiking trails that weave among oak woodlands, prairies and wetlands. According to the Wisconsin DNR, the lake of "many fishes" is still one of Wisconsin's most productive fishing lakes. Families with younger kids often pair a campground stay with a ride on the locomotive to the adjacent Little Amerricka amusement park, then back to the swim lagoon, water toys, and jumping pillow at Whistle Stop. Cyclists can ride the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, which passes through Deerfield on its run between Cottage Grove and Waukesha. Downtown Madison, the state capitol, the UW-Madison campus, and Olbrich Botanical Gardens are all within a 25-minute drive west.

How to book a site
Lake Kegonsa is reserved through the Wisconsin State Park System. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Bookings open on wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, and popular electric sites on summer weekends often go within minutes of opening. The campground features 96 campsites, 29 of which are equipped with electrical hookups, so renters who need power should target those sites early. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles brought into the property, available at the park or in advance. Private parks book directly: Badgerland accepts online and phone reservations, Whistle Stop and Hickory Hills handle bookings through their own offices, and Viking Village manages seasonal arrangements directly with the operator.
What to expect on site
Sites range from full-hookup private parks to wooded state-park loops. Whistle Stop has big-rig friendly back-in and pull-through RV sites, with a dump station, laundry, and control access gate. Badgerland offers electric and water sites along with rustic, large, VIP back-in, and VIP pull-through options. At the state park, sites 1-9 and 87-93 are partially wooded, and the rest of the sites are heavily wooded, so awning clearance and slide-out room vary by loop. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers and a dump station. Standard campsites at all state parks, forests and recreation areas are completely reservable, with no first-come, first-served standard campsites, though some northern forests and flowages may have non-reservable, no-fee camping available in remote areas. Wisconsin restricts moving firewood to limit tree pest spread, so travelers should buy local or use certified wood.

The major service corridors near Deerfield, Interstate 94 and US Highways 12 and 18, are well-patrolled by Wisconsin State Patrol. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway.
