Campgrounds near Evansville, Wisconsin
Evansville sits in Rock County in south-central Wisconsin, roughly 25 miles south of Madison and within an easy drive of the Sugar River corridor, the Yahara Chain of Lakes, and several established RV parks. The surrounding countryside is a mix of prairie, oak woodland, and farmland, with paved county highways that suit larger rigs.
RV renters typically choose between one state park campground and a cluster of private family resorts. Lake Kegonsa State Park, on the northeast shore of a 3,200-acre glacial lake southeast of Madison, is the closest public option with full RV access. Private grounds along the Sugar River near Brodhead, including Sweet Minnihaha Campground and Crazy Horse Campground, focus on tubing, kayaking, and family activities.
Closer to Stoughton, Viking Village Campground and Badgerland Campground round out the choices. Together these five properties span the range from wooded state-park sites with electric hookups to full-hookup private resorts with pools, mini-golf, and river access.
Things to do near Evansville
Water recreation drives most trips. The Sugar River, running past Sweet Minnihaha Campground and Crazy Horse Campground, is a popular tubing, canoeing, and kayaking route, and both properties offer rentals and shuttle service. Lake Kegonsa State Park adds a swimming beach, boat launch, and fishing on a 3,209-acre glacier-hewed lake with excellent panfish, bass, and walleye water.
On land, the Sugar River State Trail is a converted rail-trail that draws cyclists to the New Glarus and Brodhead area. Lake Kegonsa also has short hiking trails through prairie, forest, and marsh habitats, plus a picnic area and playground near the beach.
Day-trip options include Madison for museums, restaurants, and the Wisconsin State Capitol, the Swiss-heritage village of New Glarus, and dairy country around Monroe, known regionally as a cheese-making hub.

December - February
28° / 12°F 38 mmCold and snowy; most private campgrounds closed.
The prime camping window runs from May through October. Most private grounds in the area open around May 1 and close by late October, and Viking Village Campground confirms a May 1 season opening on its own site. Peak weekends run Memorial Day through Labor Day, with two-night minimums common and family activities at some parks on weekends.
Lake Kegonsa State Park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., but the family campground is a seasonal operation. A concessionaire sells firewood on weekends throughout the camping season and daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and moving firewood into the park from outside is not allowed.
Spring can be muddy along the Sugar River, and rising water occasionally closes riverfront sites. Fall brings strong color through the oak woodlands and cooler nights well into the 30s Fahrenheit. Winter shifts the state park to cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice fishing, with reduced amenities and no water service at RV sites.

How to book
Lake Kegonsa State Park reservations go through the Wisconsin DNR system on the wisconsin.goingtocamp.com platform. The campground has 96 family sites, 29 of which are equipped with electric hookups, and sites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission sticker is required on top of the campsite fee.
Private grounds handle bookings directly. Sweet Minnihaha Campground and Crazy Horse Campground both accept online reservations through their own websites. Viking Village Campground operates as a seasonal and monthly RV park with no nightly or weekly rentals and does not accept tents.
For summer weekends and holiday periods, reserve as far out as possible. State park sites at Lake Kegonsa are frequently fully reserved, and river-adjacent private sites sell out quickly during tubing season.
What to expect on arrival
Sites vary widely. Lake Kegonsa State Park sites 1-9 and 87-93 are partially wooded and the remainder are heavily wooded, and each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and grate. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, plus a nearby beach, swim area, playground, and picnic area within about a mile of the campground.
Private parks lean toward gravel pads with hookups. Viking Village Campground has a swimming pool, mini-golf, a volleyball court, and a large pavilion, but some sites are shorter and can be tight for larger trailers. Crazy Horse Campground offers pull-through sites with electric service suitable for bigger rigs, plus riverfront and standard options.
Bring a Wisconsin fishing license if planning to fish the Sugar River or Lake Kegonsa, keep dogs leashed on trails, and buy firewood locally rather than transporting it in.
