Campgrounds and RV parks near Hustisford, WI

Bird watching drives most trips. Over 300 species of birds can be found at Horicon Marsh throughout the year, and the marsh has been designated as both state and internationally significant areas for birds. Spring and fall migrations bring huge numbers of ducks and Canada geese to the marsh. Within the refuge, visitors can explore 10 miles of hiking trails, including a floating boardwalk that extends into the marsh, or follow a three-mile driving loop for an easy way to experience the landscape. Visitors enjoy many activities at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge including wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing, educational programs, guided tours, bicycling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and deer and upland game hunting. The Wisconsin DNR Explorium at the state visitor center houses interactive displays on the history and management of the marsh. Back at camp, families paddle and fish the Rock River. The Playful Goose adds a swimming pool, game room, shuffleboard, horseshoes, playgrounds, and shoreline fishing.

Camping in the Hustisford area is largely a warm-weather affair. The Playful Goose typically runs from late spring through early fall, with reduced weekend-only operations tailing into October. Most private parks in the region follow a similar May-through-October pattern, and shoulder-season visitors should confirm hookups and gate hours before arrival. Spring and fall are the marquee wildlife windows. A major stopover for migratory birds, the marsh is known for its seasonal wildlife viewing, particularly during spring and fall migrations. Summer brings warm, humid days, higher mosquito pressure in the wetlands, and peak family bookings; sites at the closest campgrounds often fill weeks out for holiday weekends. Winter access shifts to day use. The entire refuge is open from December 1 through March 15 for hiking, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. Campgrounds close and services in the small surrounding towns thin out. RV travelers targeting fall migration should book by late summer, since the goose spectacle draws regional crowds.

Expect a rural, low-key setting. Roads into the campgrounds are narrow county highways with occasional farm traffic; larger Class A rigs should scout turnarounds before committing to unfamiliar side roads. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Rock River corridor but can drop inside the marsh. Sites near the river tend to be shaded and grassy, with a mix of wooded riverfront and open, rolling meadow layouts at the larger parks. Hookup levels vary by park, with 20, 30, and 50 amp service common, most sites offering water, and dump stations available at the closer RV parks. Bring bug spray, binoculars, and layered clothing. Garbage cans on the refuge are limited, so practice pack it in, pack it out. Dogs are welcome at trails and public use areas but must be leashed at all times. Marsh mornings are when the wildlife shows up.
