Campgrounds near Jefferson, Wisconsin
Jefferson sits in south-central Wisconsin at the confluence of the Rock and Crawfish rivers, roughly midway between Madison and Milwaukee. The surrounding countryside is glacial drumlin terrain: rolling farmland, wetlands, small lakes, and river corridors. Private RV parks dominate the local camping scene, with Wisconsin State Park System properties such as the Kettle Moraine State Forest and Lake Kegonsa State Park reachable within a short drive.
Bark River Campground and Resort and River Bend RV Resort are among the closer options to Jefferson, both offering river-oriented sites suited to RVs and trailers. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson is the largest family-focused resort in the area, with heavy programming aimed at kids. Silo Ridge and Circle K Campground round out the nearby private parks.
Most campers use Jefferson as a base for the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, Aztalan State Park, and day trips into Madison or the Kettle Moraine. The area is flat, RV-friendly, and easily reached via Interstate 94 and State Highway 26.
Things to do near Jefferson
The Glacial Drumlin State Trail is the headline attraction: a 52-mile rail trail running between Cottage Grove and Waukesha, passing directly through Jefferson with a short on-road connector near town. The trail is flat and family-friendly, open to biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing depending on the season.
Aztalan State Park, a short drive north near Lake Mills, preserves a National Historic Landmark archaeological site along the Crawfish River, with reconstructed platform mounds and stockade sections from a Middle-Mississippian village that thrived between roughly A.D. 1000 and 1300. Paddlers and anglers use the Rock, Crawfish, and Bark rivers, and Lake Koshkonong is a short drive southwest for boating and fishing.
On-site amenities at nearby parks add rainy-day options, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park runs water play areas, mini-golf, and character events aimed at families.

The Jefferson-area private camping season generally runs from spring through fall, with most parks open roughly mid-April through late October. Outside these windows, most private parks close and dump stations shut off to prevent freezing. Campers should confirm exact open and close dates directly with each operator, as they shift year to year.
Summer is peak season. June through August brings warm days, frequent thunderstorms, and the highest weekend demand, especially around Independence Day, Jefferson County Fair week, and Labor Day. Weekends at family-focused parks often book out weeks in advance.
Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and better site availability. Fall color in southern Wisconsin typically peaks in mid-October. Winter in the region is cold and snowy, with average daily highs near freezing and lows well below. Snowmobiling is permitted on the limestone section of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail once county trails open, but the paved eastern section between Dousman and Waukesha is closed to snowmobiles.

How to book campgrounds near Jefferson
Private parks around Jefferson take reservations directly. Bark River Campground and Resort, River Bend RV Resort, Silo Ridge, Circle K Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson all handle bookings by phone or through their own websites. Family-themed weekends at Jellystone, such as Halloween-themed events in the fall, tend to sell out earliest and should be booked several months ahead.
For Wisconsin State Park System campgrounds within day-trip range, reservations go through the state's Going to Camp system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Reservations can be made up to 11 months before the start date, with availability for the date 11 months away opening at 9 a.m. Central Time for both internet and telephone customers. Popular parks like Devil's Lake fill quickly for summer weekends. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles brought into the property, in addition to campsite fees.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Jefferson are mostly level and grassy, with a mix of open and shaded loops. Full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service are common at the larger private parks, and dump stations are standard. Cell service is generally reliable throughout Jefferson County, and most parks offer basic Wi-Fi near central buildings.
Expect family-heavy weekends in summer, with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities at the resort-style parks. Sites at Jellystone are close together and lively; quieter, more traditional camping is easier to find at the smaller parks like Silo Ridge and Circle K. Weekday stays are noticeably calmer than weekends.
Bring bug spray for spring and early summer, when mosquitoes are heavy near wetlands and river bottoms. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Wisconsin's emerald ash borer quarantine rules.

A Class C motorhome gets about 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan 16 to 20 MPG, and a travel trailer's fuel cost depends on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Jefferson?
Driving around Jefferson is genuinely easy, which is part of why it's such a great RV base. The town sits at the junction of US-18 and WI-26, with Interstate 94 just a short drive north, giving you fast access to Madison and Milwaukee without big-city congestion. Roads are flat to gently rolling through the surrounding farmland and the Kettle Moraine glacial hills. Two local realities to watch for: deer are active at dawn and dusk year-round (especially fall), and winter brings snow and ice from November through March, which can make rural county roads slick. Pro tip: avoid I-94 westbound out of Milwaukee on Friday afternoons; traffic toward the Dells gets heavy from 3 to 6 pm.

Pro tip: even if your site is electric-only, you can fill freshwater at the dump station on arrival, then dump and refill on departure, no need to break camp midweek.

You'll be well-equipped. Most motorhome rental Jefferson listings on RVezy include a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, propane furnace, a dinette or sofa that converts to extra sleeping space, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many also include a generator, outdoor speakers, a TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Travel trailers and fifth wheels skip the cab but pack the same living amenities. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's onboard: sleeps count, bed configuration, and any extras. Pro tip: message the host to confirm bedding and kitchenware are included; many provide a full camp-ready setup so you only need to bring food and clothes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jefferson%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons can I get with my RV rental in Jefferson?
Jefferson hosts offer terrific add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include delivery and setup (priced per mile from the host's location), generator use (typically a few dollars per hour for trailers without solar), bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and grills, bike racks, and even kayak or paddleboard rentals. Pickup and drop-off times are set by each host, and many are flexible if you ask in advance. Mileage policies are listed on every page, with most offering 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, bedding, and a kitchen kit on your first trip so you arrive to an RV that's truly ready to roll.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jefferson%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Jefferson WI, RVezy charges your credit or debit card for the rental cost, protection plan, and applicable taxes through the platform; you never pay the host directly in cash. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is held separately from the booking payment and is released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid any hiccups: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return it with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Jefferson during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Jefferson WI is possible and increasingly popular. Some Jefferson-area hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and proper insulation, ideal for ice fishing on Lake Koshkonong, snowmobiling near the Glacial Drumlin trails, or a quiet Kettle Moraine getaway. Ottawa Lake Campground stays open year-round with limited winter facilities. The keys to a successful cold-weather trip: book a host who confirms the RV is winter-rated, plan to use shore power (electric heat) wherever possible to save propane, and keep freshwater hoses heated or drained. Winter highs in Jefferson typically run around 30°F in December with January lows near 10°F, so dress in layers and embrace the adventure.
