Camping near Lake Koshkonong
Lake Koshkonong sits in southern Wisconsin along the Rock River, straddling Jefferson, Rock, and Dane counties. The reservoir covers roughly 10,460 acres but averages only about six feet deep, making it one of the largest and shallowest lakes in the state. Fort Atkinson anchors the north end, with Edgerton and Milton on the south and west shores.
RV campgrounds cluster around the shoreline and the towns just north and east of the lake. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson is the closest family-focused resort, while Silo Ridge, Lakeland RV Campground, Lakeshore Resort, and Hickory Hills Campground provide additional options within a short drive of boat launches and the Rock River.
The area is a working farm landscape rather than a national-park destination. Expect flat terrain, county highways connecting small towns, and a camping culture built around fishing, boating, and weekend lake use rather than backcountry hiking.
Things to do around Lake Koshkonong
Fishing drives most trips here. The Wisconsin DNR manages the lake, and anglers target walleye, northern pike, muskie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, and panfish such as crappie and bluegill. Check current Wisconsin fishing regulations for open seasons, size limits, and bag limits before heading out.
Boating, swimming, and watersports are straightforward thanks to public boat landings and beaches around the shoreline. The Rock River Water Trail, the first National Water Trail designated in Wisconsin and Illinois, runs through the lake and connects paddlers to quieter stretches of river north toward Fort Atkinson and Jefferson.
Off the water, families use Fort Atkinson for groceries, ice, and restaurants, and the Bark River offers calmer canoeing and kayaking for younger paddlers.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and the lake is fully open to boating and swimming. June is historically the wettest month, so expect afternoon thunderstorms; July delivers the most sunshine and the warmest water.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons. May brings tree cover, spring walleye action, and mild days, but nights can still drop below freezing early in the month. September and October offer cool, clear weather and thinner crowds, with foliage typically peaking in mid to late October before hard frosts settle in.
Winter is cold, snowy, and windy, with average February highs near freezing and overnight lows well below zero Fahrenheit during cold snaps. Most private RV parks close by late October and reopen in April or May. Ice fishing continues on the lake through winter, but overnight RV camping options are limited during the cold months.

Booking an RV site near Lake Koshkonong
Private campgrounds around Lake Koshkonong, including Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson, Silo Ridge, Lakeland RV Campground, Lakeshore Resort, and Hickory Hills Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day, fill months in advance, so book early if a lakefront or full-hookup site is important.
Wisconsin State Park campgrounds in the broader region use the Wisconsin DNR reservation system on the GoingToCamp portal, which opens sites up to eleven months ahead. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the camping fee.
Check cancellation and pet policies at booking. Many private parks require deposits for holiday weekends and enforce minimum-night stays.
What to expect on-site
Most RV parks near Lake Koshkonong offer a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and basic sites, with 30 and 50 amp service common at the larger resorts. Sites are generally level and grassy or gravel, with mature trees providing partial shade. Cell coverage is reliable across the area on major carriers.
Expect family-oriented amenities at the resort-style parks: pools, playgrounds, mini golf, and scheduled weekend activities aimed at kids. Smaller parks lean quieter and more fishing-focused, with boat parking, cleaning stations, and direct or short-drive access to launches.
Mosquitoes and biting flies can be heavy near the marshy shoreline in June and July, so pack repellent. The lake is shallow and can churn up quickly in wind, so check conditions before heading out with small boats or paddlecraft.
