Camping near Lake Mills, Wisconsin
Lake Mills sits in Jefferson County in south-central Wisconsin, roughly 30 miles east of Madison and about 50 miles west of Milwaukee, along the Interstate 94 corridor. The city fronts Rock Lake and neighbors the Crawfish River, which gives RV travelers easy access to swimming, paddling, and fishing without long drives between attractions.
The area is best known for Aztalan State Park, a National Historic Landmark showcasing an ancient Middle-Mississippian village and ceremonial complex that thrived between A.D. 1000 and 1300. The park covers 172 acres along the Crawfish River, and while visitors can fish and canoe, the park does not have a boat launch. Aztalan is a day-use park with no overnight camping, so RV travelers stay at private campgrounds and resorts in the surrounding countryside and drive in for visits.
Private options within a short drive include River Bend RV Resort, Whistle Stop Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson, Hickory Hills Campground, and Silo Ridge. These range from family-focused resorts with pools and activities to quieter rural parks better suited to travelers who want a base for exploring Aztalan, Rock Lake, and the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.
Things to do around Lake Mills
Aztalan State Park is the primary draw. Visitors can walk among reconstructed portions of the village stockade and flat-topped earthen mounds, and anglers can fish for northern pike, catfish, and walleye in the Crawfish River, along with canoeing and boating. The nearby Aztalan Museum, operated by the Lake Mills-Aztalan Historical Society, is open from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays from mid-May through late September.
In town, Sandy Beach Park on Rock Lake has swimming beaches, a boat launch, and rentals for canoes, kayaks, pontoons, and jet skis. The Glacial Drumlin State Trail stretches 52 miles from Cottage Grove to Waukesha along the old Chicago and North Western Railway corridor, passing directly through Lake Mills and offering flat, family-friendly cycling. Near mile 14, the trail crosses a bridge between upper and lower Rock Lake just before reaching Lake Mills, where a restored 1895 train depot houses trail exhibits and visitor services.

Camping season in south-central Wisconsin runs primarily from May through October. June through August delivers the warmest weather and the longest days, with typical highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit, and it is also the wettest stretch of the year. Summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day, book up early at both state and private campgrounds.
Spring arrives late. April and early May can still bring frost and heavy rain, though wildflowers and migrating birds along the Crawfish River make late May a rewarding shoulder-season window. Fall is often the most comfortable time to visit: September and October bring warm days, cool nights, and lower bug pressure, with oak color peaking in mid-October.
Winters are cold and snowy, with January averaging highs around the mid 20s Fahrenheit. Many private campgrounds close from late October through April, though Aztalan State Park itself is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. all year for day use, hiking, and cross-country skiing on ungroomed trails.

How to book campgrounds near Lake Mills
Aztalan State Park does not offer camping, so RV travelers book at private campgrounds in the area. Reservations at properties like River Bend RV Resort, Whistle Stop Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson, Hickory Hills Campground, and Silo Ridge are made directly through each campground's website or by phone. Summer holiday weekends often require multi-night minimums and should be booked several months out.
For state-run camping elsewhere in the region, the Wisconsin DNR accepts reservations up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. The reservation window opens online at 9 a.m., 11 months prior to the booking date. A Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker is required for entry to Aztalan and other state properties, and can be purchased daily or annually.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape around Lake Mills is classic glacial drumlin country: low, cigar-shaped hills created by Ice Age glaciers, separated by wetlands, farm fields, and small lakes. Roads to campgrounds are generally paved and easy to navigate in a Class C or travel trailer, though some rural approach roads narrow near the campground entrance.
Site types vary widely. Private resorts in the area typically offer full hook-up pull-throughs with 30- and 50-amp service, along with pools, laundry, and camp stores. Smaller rural parks lean toward back-in sites with electric and water, with a central dump station on site.
Cell service is reliable on major carriers throughout Jefferson County. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from May through September near the Crawfish River and wooded parcels, so travelers should pack repellent and check for ticks after hikes at Aztalan or along the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lake Mills, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lake Mills?
RV rental in Lake Mills is an affordable alternative to lakefront cabins or hotels during busy Madison and Milwaukee event weekends. Expect roughly $95 to $185 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically range from $185 to $325 per night, before fees and add-ons. You can save more by booking midweek, traveling in late September after summer crowds leave, or filtering for instant book listings on RVezy. Many Lake Mills hosts also offer weekly discounts and RV delivery to nearby campgrounds, which can make a 4-night Crawfish River trip cheaper than two weekend escapes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mills%2C%20WisconsinWhat is the best time to rent an RV in Lake Mills?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for RV camping in Lake Mills, with daytime highs typically in the 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit from May through September and cool evenings that are perfect for campfires. July and August deliver the warmest weather and full lake access at Rock Lake, while late September and early October bring colorful foliage along the Glacial Drumlin State Trail and lower nightly rates. Winter RV rentals are limited because temperatures regularly drop below freezing, so most travelers plan a Lake Mills RV trip between May and October. For fewer crowds and great weather, target weekdays in June or the last two weeks of September.
weather.gov/mkx/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Lake Mills, Wisconsin?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Mills for virtually every motorhome and trailer listed on RVezy. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License for personal-use recreational vehicles, and peer-to-peer rentals fall well within standard license limits. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old and complete RVezy's quick driver verification at checkout. International visitors should bring their home country's license, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Most first-time renters are surprised how easy it is to step into a Class C motorhome or travel trailer for a Lake Mills RV trip.
