Camping near Lake Ripley, Wisconsin
Lake Ripley sits on the west side of the village of Cambridge in Jefferson County, roughly 20 minutes east of Madison and about 50 minutes west of Milwaukee. The lake covers 420 acres and reaches a maximum depth of 44 feet, and it drains into Koshkonong Creek and the Rock River system. RV renters use it as a base for lake days on Ripley and nearby Lake Koshkonong, plus rail-trail and small-town exploring in south-central Wisconsin.
Most overnight options are private campgrounds a short drive from the lake rather than lakefront sites. The closest clusters sit around Cambridge, Edgerton, Marshall, and Fort Atkinson. Hickory Hills Campground and Creekview Campground handle traditional family and RV camping, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson and Whistle Stop Campground lean heavily kid-focused, and Silo Ridge is a 55-plus RV community.
Ripley Park itself is an 18-acre park on the western shore of the lake, cared for by the Cambridge Foundation since 1946 and programmed through the Cambridge Community Activities Program. It provides the public beach, boat access, and day-use amenities most RV renters use during their stay.
Things to do around Lake Ripley
The lake is the main draw. Visitors have access from public boat landings and a public beach, with panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye in the water. Ripley Park adds two tennis courts, a basketball court, a children's play structure, volleyball courts, and an on-site bathhouse with showers, so families can fill a full day without leaving the shoreline.
Off the water, Cambridge sits near the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, a paved rail-trail that runs east toward the Milwaukee suburbs, and near the Cam-Rock County Park trails for mountain biking and hiking along Koshkonong Creek. Fort Atkinson and its Hoard Historical Museum are a short drive south, and Little Amerricka Amusement Park in Marshall is directly adjacent to Whistle Stop Campground.
Madison's lakes, zoo, and Capitol Square are a straightforward day trip west for rainy days or an urban break.

The southern Wisconsin camping season effectively runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Most private parks in the area open in April or May and close in October, with a handful of Wisconsin state properties elsewhere in the region offering limited winter camping.
Summer is peak. School-break weekends, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson, Whistle Stop Campground, Hickory Hills Campground, and Creekview Campground well in advance, and the Ripley Park beach is only staffed and open during this window. Water temperatures on Lake Ripley are warmest from late June into August.
Late spring and early fall trade some warmth for far easier bookings, fewer bugs, and quieter beaches. Fall color in this part of Wisconsin typically peaks in the second half of October, when overnight lows drop toward freezing and many private parks begin winterizing sites.

Aaron is a really nice guy and has great communications. He showed up exactly when he was supposed to. Delivered it, set it up for me, walked me through how everything works. Camper was great air conditioning refrigerator toilet everything worked. Bed was comfortable,. Then he showed up to pick it up exactly on time I left and he dismantled it and took it away. I did not have to do anything but enjoy it.

Booking a campsite near Lake Ripley
Private campgrounds around Lake Ripley take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, usually opening bookings for the following season in late fall or early winter. Family-focused parks such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson, Whistle Stop Campground, Hickory Hills Campground, and Creekview Campground sell out summer weekends and holiday weeks first, so RV renters should lock dates in months ahead for July and August.
For state park camping in the wider region, reservations run through the Wisconsin DNR Going to Camp system up to 11 months before the arrival date. Nonresident campers pay an additional fee per night on top of the standard site rate, and a vehicle admission pass is required at all state properties.
Silo Ridge in Fort Atkinson is a 55-and-over community, so screen age restrictions before booking with younger travelers.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of shaded, wooded private campgrounds and more open, resort-style parks rather than rugged public lakeshore camping. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Fort Atkinson sits on 80 acres with 569 sites and 13 cabins, delivering a high-activity, kid-heavy environment with themed weekends, heated pools, mini-golf, and character visits. Sites are typically level and close together, with full-hookup options.
Hickory Hills Campground near Edgerton is smaller and more traditional, with shaded sites under mature trees. Whistle Stop Campground in Marshall sits next to Little Amerricka Amusement Park, which is the main reason families choose it.
Cell coverage is generally solid across Jefferson and Dane counties. Mosquitoes are typical for the Upper Midwest in June and July, ticks are present in wooded and grassy areas, and Wisconsin invasive-species rules require draining and inspecting boats and trailers between water bodies.
