Campgrounds near Mazomanie, Wisconsin

Mazomanie sits along the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway in Dane County, roughly 25 miles west of Madison. The area is a mix of Driftless-region ridges, oak woods, and river bottoms, which shapes what camping looks like here: state park campgrounds on wooded hilltops, a few private RV parks in the surrounding countryside, and canoe-access sites on Wisconsin River sandbars. Blue Mound State Park sits atop the largest hill in the southern half of Wisconsin, near the village of Blue Mounds, with a pair of observation towers offering views of the Wisconsin River valley, the Baraboo Range, and the surrounding Driftless Area. To the northwest, Tower Hill State Park sits above the Wisconsin River outside Spring Green and offers a small, quiet campground plus scenic bluff trails, a canoe landing, a picnic area, and a historic shot-tower site. Closer to town, Buddy's River Resort, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Merry Macs Campground round out the private options for RV travelers who want hookups, longer stays, or amenities beyond what the state parks offer.

Things to do near Mazomanie

The Lower Wisconsin River is the main draw. Paddlers put in at area landings for multi-day float trips, and sandbars and sandy beaches suitable for primitive camping are common during normal summer flows in this reach. At Blue Mound State Park, visitors can hike, mountain bike, and cross-country ski on the park's trail network, and the park has a summer swimming pool, a rarity in the Wisconsin state park system. From the pair of observation towers, viewers can take in the Wisconsin River valley, the Baraboo Range, the mounds and rolling forests of the Driftless Area, and the plains east toward Madison. Tower Hill State Park adds a preserved mid-1800s lead shot tower, quiet bluff hikes, and a canoe landing on the Wisconsin River. Nearby, the Military Ridge State Trail connects to Blue Mound for rail-trail cycling, and Cave of the Mounds is a family-friendly rainy-day option.

Wet and variable; high river flows can limit sandbar camping
summer

Warm, humid, thunderstorms; peak bookings, reserve months ahead
fall
September - November
59° / 37°F 68 mm
Cool nights and strong color through October; crowds thin
winter
December - February
28° / 12°F 35 mm
Cold and snowy; walk or ski in only at Blue Mound

Peak camping season runs from May through October. At Blue Mound State Park, reservations for family camping are accepted from May 1 through October 31 on sites 1-56, and summer weekends around the Fourth of July and Labor Day fill early. Book several months ahead if a specific site matters. Spring brings wildflowers and green-up on the Driftless ridges, but river levels can run high after snowmelt, which shrinks sandbar camping options for paddlers. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; mosquitoes are active near the river, so pack repellent. Fall delivers reliable color through October and cooler nights that thin the crowds. Winter is a genuine season here. The Blue Mound campground is open year-round with 78 wooded sites, 12 bike/hike-in sites, and a rustic accessible cabin, though winter camping is walk or ski in only. Tower Hill's campground operates seasonally, and private RV parks along the river typically close for the cold months, so confirm dates before booking.

Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!

How to book near Mazomanie

Wisconsin state parks use a single reservation system operated by the DNR through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. For both Blue Mound and Tower Hill, reservations are required for campsites, may be made the day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, and can be booked online or by phone. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required in addition to the camping fee. At Tower Hill, all 10 sites are non-electric and reservable through the same system. Same-day online or phone reservations avoid the extra reservation fee charged for advance bookings. Private campgrounds such as Buddy's River Resort, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Merry Macs Campground handle their own reservations directly, usually online or by phone. Holiday weekends often require a multi-night minimum.

What to expect at Mazomanie campgrounds

State park sites in this area are wooded and quiet, but hookups are limited. At Blue Mound, the campground has drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station at the campground entrance, and only a subset of sites carry electric hookups. Larger rigs should check site length and levelness before booking. Tower Hill is smaller and more rustic, with non-electric sites, vault toilets, and seasonal drinking water available roughly from Memorial Day weekend through early October. It is better suited to tent campers and short trailers than big Class A motorhomes. For full hookups, dedicated RV loops, and family amenities, Buddy's River Resort, Crystal Lake Campground and RV Park, and Merry Macs Campground are the practical choices. Pets are welcome on leash in the state parks, with restrictions around swim, beach, and picnic areas. Bring bug spray, especially near the river.
