Campgrounds near McFarland
McFarland sits on the south shore of Lake Waubesa in Dane County, minutes from Madison and within a short drive of the Yahara chain of lakes. RV renters use it as a quiet base for exploring the Madison area while staying close to boating, fishing, and bike trails.
The closest public option is Lake Kegonsa State Park, a Wisconsin state park on the northeast shore of Lake Kegonsa in Dane County southeast of Madison. The campground features 96 campsites, 29 of which are equipped with electrical hookups, with sites 1-9 and 87-93 partially wooded and the rest heavily wooded. Private options within reach include Badgerland Campground, Viking Village Campground, Creekview Campground, and Madison Campground, which round out choices for travelers who want full hookups or a longer-stay park.
Most sites in the area are set among oak woodland and prairie typical of south-central Wisconsin, with lake access, boat launches, and paved roads suited to travel trailers and Class C motorhomes.
Things to do near McFarland
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Kegonsa State Park offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing, and a boat landing on a glacial lake covering 3,209 acres with a maximum depth of over 30 feet. A swimming beach, picnic areas with reservable shelters, and a boat launch are within 1 mile of the campground.
On land, the park is known for its campground, beach, and approximately 5 miles of hiking trails through oak woodland, prairie, and wetlands. A designated pet swim and picnic area suits families traveling with dogs.
Madison is a short drive north and adds the Capitol Square farmers market, the University of Wisconsin Arboretum, and the Yahara lakes bike routes. Stoughton, just south, offers small-town dining and Norwegian heritage stops.

The camping season in south-central Wisconsin runs roughly from late April through late October, and the shoulder weeks can be cold. The dump station is open during the camping season and sits between the family camp and the group camp on the main park road, and it may be closed in early May and late October depending on weather conditions. Showers and flush toilets may be unavailable in early May and late October due to seasonal water system shutdowns.
Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly, and lakefront sites go first. A concessionaire sells firewood on all weekends during the camping season and daily during the Memorial Day to Labor Day season.
Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and open midweek availability. Winter closes most amenities, though the park itself is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. year-round for day use, cross-country skiing, and sledding.

How to book a campsite near McFarland
Wisconsin state park sites are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations can be made at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757 up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date. Book electric sites for summer weekends several months out.
A park pass is required on top of the site fee. A Wisconsin vehicle admission sticker is required for park entry. Out-of-state renters can buy the sticker online in advance or at the park office on arrival.
Private campgrounds such as Badgerland Campground, Viking Village Campground, Creekview Campground, and Madison Campground handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone, and typically release seasonal inventory earlier in the year.
What to expect
Sites at the closest state park are wooded and quiet. The campground accommodates tents, pop-ups, trailers, and RVs with one wheeled camping unit allowed per site. Electric hookups are limited, and there are no individual water or sewer hookups at the sites, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and use the dump station on the way out.
Camping facilities include flush toilets and showers near the campground entrance, three vault toilets distributed throughout, and drinking water at multiple locations, with a sanitary dump station between the family and group camping areas.
Expect mature tree cover that can complicate satellite reception and taller-roof clearance on some interior loops. Cell service is generally reliable given the proximity to Madison, and the surrounding roads are paved and easy to navigate for larger rigs.

Yes, an RV road trip from McFarland to neighboring states is totally doable and very popular. Minnesota's North Shore, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Illinois, and Iowa are all within easy reach, and most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel. Crossing into Canada (Ontario, Manitoba) is allowed by many hosts as long as you let them know in advance and confirm coverage details, since insurance rules differ across the border. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm your route, especially for Canada trips, so paperwork is squared away ahead of pickup.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will I spend on fuel for a McFarland RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip expenses, but it's very budgetable in Wisconsin. Class B campervan rental McFarland options get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, and big Class A coaches typically run 6-9 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, but expect a 25-30% hit to its normal MPG. Wisconsin gas prices have recently averaged around $3.10-$3.40 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a 300-mile loop through the Dells and Devil's Lake in a Class C, plan on roughly $90-$120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in McFarland or Stoughton before heading north, since prices climb noticeably once you reach tourist hubs like Wisconsin Dells.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near McFarland?
For Wisconsin state parks like Lake Kegonsa and Devil's Lake, book as early as possible because reservations open 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and summer weekends sell out quickly. For private parks like Madison KOA Holiday or Viking Village Campground, 2-3 months ahead is usually enough except around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Badger football weekends, when 4-6 months is safer. Mid-week stays in June or September are far easier to grab last-minute. Pro tip: if Lake Kegonsa is full, check Babcock County Park in McFarland or Mendota County Park, both of which are reservable through Dane County Parks and are less competitive.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around McFarland?
Driving an RV around McFarland is genuinely easy. US Highway 51 and County Highway AB give you straightforward access in and out of town, the terrain is gently rolling farmland, and you're only 12 miles from downtown Madison via the Beltline (US-12/18). Avoid driving the Beltline between 4-6 PM on weekdays when commuter traffic is heaviest, and watch for low railroad underpasses in downtown Madison (some are under 11 feet) by sticking to the Beltline or US-51 in larger rigs. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most renters stick to May-October. Pro tip: use the Wisconsin 511 app for real-time road conditions and construction alerts before any drive longer than an hour.
511wi.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near McFarland?

Lake Kegonsa State Park has electric hookups (no water or sewer at the site), modern flush restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station near the entrance. Madison KOA Holiday and Viking Village Campground offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Babcock County Park has electric-only sites with a shared water spigot. For dumping and filling fresh water mid-trip, the Lake Kegonsa dump station is free for registered campers, and several gas stations along Highway 51 in Stoughton offer dump access. Pro tip: when searching the best campgrounds near McFarland, check whether sites are pull-through or back-in if you're new to backing up a trailer.

A typical motorhome rental McFarland comes with real beds (queen or king in the master, plus bunks or convertible dinettes), a working kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both AC and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awnings, and an onboard generator. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in Wisconsin's rural campgrounds, so hosts often include a cell signal booster or hotspot. Pro tip: filter for "Generator" if you plan to camp at Lake Kegonsa or other state parks where electric hookups are limited to certain loops.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/lakekegonsa/campingWhat add-ons and options are available with a McFarland RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a wide range of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Popular options include camping kits with linens, towels, cookware and dishes ($50-$100 flat fee), bike racks ($25-$50), kayak or paddleboard rentals ($30-$60/day, perfect for Lake Kegonsa and Lake Waubesa), generators, fire pits, outdoor chairs and tables, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in McFarland or surrounding Madison-area suburbs, with drop-off at the same location, although delivery to your campground is often available too. Mileage policies vary by listing, with 100-150 free miles per night being typical and unlimited mileage offered on some rigs. Pro tip: book add-ons during checkout rather than at pickup to lock in pricing.
travelwisconsin.com/things-to-do/outdoor-fun/water-recreationHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, so there is no cash exchange with the host. You pay in full at booking using a credit or debit card, and that covers the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, taxes, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit (typically $500-$1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged outright, and released after the trip assuming the RV is returned in good shape with no damage or missing items. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off and share it via the RVezy app to keep your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in McFarland during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in McFarland are available and offer a memorable way to experience southern Wisconsin's snowy season. Some RVezy hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore power capability suited to cold temperatures. Lake Kegonsa State Park stays open year-round for winter camping with limited services, and ice fishing on Lake Kegonsa and Lake Waubesa is popular in January and February. Most winter renters park at a site with 30 or 50 amp electric and use the RV as a warm basecamp. Pro tip: message the host directly to confirm tank heaters and insulation before booking a December to February trip.
