Campgrounds near Montello, Wisconsin
Montello is a small city in Marquette County, in south-central Wisconsin, and serves as the county seat. A dam in town creates Buffalo Lake to the west, and the Montello River meets the Fox River at the south end of town, with another dam forming Montello Lake upstream. The result is an RV destination built around glacial lakes, a working river system, and easy interstate access from I-39.
The area sits within a cluster of privately owned lakeside resorts rather than a single state park. Options range from tent camping to RV sites with full hookups and cabin rentals, with most campgrounds offering water access and lake-oriented recreation. Closer-in choices include Buffalo Lake Camping Resort, Kilby Lake Campground, Crooked River Campground, Ox Creek RV Park, and Sunrise Resort Campground.
Montello also works as a quieter base for regional day trips. Wisconsin Dells sits roughly 30 miles southwest, which makes local campgrounds popular with families who want lake camping plus access to the Dells attractions.
Things to do near Montello
Fishing and paddling drive most trips. Buffalo Lake Camping Resort sits on the southern shore of Buffalo Lake, where anglers target northern pike and largemouth bass. Kilby Lake spans 50 acres and reaches depths of 35 feet as a no-wake zone, and holds catfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, crappies, perch, and other panfish. Boat and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available on site.
On-site family amenities are common. Buffalo Lake Camping Resort offers a solar-heated swimming pool, a gaga ball pit, a playground, basketball and sand volleyball courts, an arcade, and planned activities, and pedal bikes are available for rent. Kilby Lake Campground adds a heated pool, mini golf, hiking and nature trails, boat rentals, a playground, and a large shelter for group events.
Off-site, downtown Montello features small granite waterfalls in a city park, and Wisconsin Dells water parks are a short drive southwest for a day-trip break from lake time.

Camping in this corner of Wisconsin is a warm-season activity. The camping season in the Montello area typically runs from mid-April through mid-October, with most facilities closing during winter months. Kilby Lake Campground, for example, is open from April 15 to October 15, and Crooked River Campground also operates seasonally from mid-April through mid-October, accommodating RVs up to 90 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections.
Summer is the busiest window and the reason to book early. Warm-season highs typically reach the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, and lake resorts fill quickly on weekends. Mosquitoes can be abundant near water, particularly in June and July when evening temperatures stay above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so plan on repellent and screen rooms.
Shoulder-season stays are cooler and quieter. Late April and early May can still see frost overnight, and October brings foliage color along the Fox and Montello rivers before parks shut for the year. Winter is not a viable RV window in this area, and winters in Montello are freezing, snowy, and windy.

Booking and reservations
Nearly every campground in the Montello area is privately operated, so bookings go directly through each park rather than a single state or federal reservation system. Kilby Lake Campground takes reservations by phone and through online booking, and Buffalo Lake Camping Resort accepts reservations by phone and on its website. Crooked River Campground, Sunrise Resort Campground, and Ox Creek RV Park book directly as well.
Summer weekends, holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and themed event weekends fill first. Buffalo Lake Camping Resort schedules themed weekends through the season, including a large Fourth of July celebration, Tropical Splash, Yard Game Olympics, Christmas in July, and August themes such as 80s, Around the World, Pirate Takeover, and Western weekends, followed by Labor Day activities, a Vintage Camper Rally, and Halloween weekends. Reserving several weeks ahead is standard for peak dates, especially for full-hookup and pull-through sites.
For Wisconsin state park campgrounds elsewhere in the region, reservations go through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system on a rolling window.
What to expect on the ground
Expect family-oriented lake resorts rather than backcountry sites. Kilby Lake Campground offers 140 wooded, secluded sites on a 50-acre no-wake fishing lake, with a heated pool, mini golf, hiking and nature trails, boat rentals, a playground, and a large group shelter. Buffalo Lake Camping Resort provides water, electric, 50-amp, and sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, a pool, cable TV, and allows pets and tents.
Sites vary in size and privacy. Buffalo Lake sites are generally wide and level with clean bathhouses, while Crooked River Campground has 125 sites at 787 feet elevation and offers monthly rates.
Seasonal campers make up a large share of most parks, so weekly visitors will share the grounds with a stable community of returning families. Cell coverage is generally reliable, but check individual park websites for hookup amperage and big-rig access before arriving.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Montello, WI
How much does an RV rental in Montello, WI typically cost?
Good news: RV rental in Montello, WI is one of the most affordable ways to vacation in central Wisconsin. On RVezy, travel trailers often start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Pricing depends on RV age, size, and add-ons like generators or bike racks. For a cheap RV rental Montello WI getaway, target shoulder months like late May or September, when nightly rates drop and Buffalo Lake is still gorgeous. Pro tip: weekly bookings often unlock host discounts of 10 to 25 percent, so a full week exploring the granite quarry and Wisconsin Dells can cost less per night than a weekend.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marquette-county/montelloWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Montello, Wisconsin?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Montello. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers, even the big Class A rigs you'll see on the platform. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking flow, so there's no paperwork to print or notarize. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Once you're verified, your Montello host handles the rest with a full walkthrough at pickup.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/dr-lic.aspxWhat protection comes with my Montello RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 22 toward Wilderness Campground with peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout, not the host, so you can match coverage to your family RV trip in Montello. The plan provides significant financial protection for unexpected events during your trip, from a fender bump in downtown Montello to a hailstorm rolling across Marquette County. Combined with RVezy's 24/7 support line, you're covered from pickup to drop-off on every RV rental in Montello.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Montello RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, so every Montello rental follows the same clear rules. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional refund tiers based on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Because the policy is consistent across listings, comparing a campervan rental in Montello is much simpler. If plans shift, open your RVezy dashboard or message support, no need to negotiate with your host. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer dates around the Marquette County Fair, then adjust later if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Montello?
Absolutely, plenty of Montello hosts welcome dogs and cats. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly narrow your search to a pet-friendly RV rental Montello list, then message the host about any breed or size questions before booking. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Ox Creek Campground in Montello has a dedicated off-leash Bark Park, Wilderness Campground welcomes leashed dogs on its trails, and Wisconsin State Parks allow pets on leashes up to 8 feet across most campgrounds and trails. Pro tip: pack a long line for Buffalo Lake shoreline strolls, since the Fox River frontage in town is a hit with water-loving dogs.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Montello?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to camp if you'd rather skip towing. Many Montello hosts offer RV delivery straight to local campgrounds like Wilderness Campground on Hwy 22, Buffalo Lake Camping Resort on Lake Avenue, Lake Arrowhead Campground on Fox Court, or Kilby Lake Campground on Fern Avenue. Your host arrives ahead of you, levels the rig, connects water, power, and sewer, and walks you through every system, from the furnace to the awning. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which listings include it. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV, since you'll start your trip already set up at the lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Montello RV trip, and do mileage limits apply?
You've got serious range from Montello. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many including 100 to 150 free miles per night and some offering an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From Montello you can reach Wisconsin Dells in about 30 miles, Madison in 70 miles, Milwaukee in 110 miles, Green Bay in 120 miles, and Door County in roughly 170 miles, all easy day trips or weekend loops. Always check the mileage policy on the listing page before booking, and message the host if you're planning a bigger loop. Pro tip: bundling free miles into a Dells, Madison, and Devil's Lake circuit gives you classic Wisconsin scenery without stretching the odometer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106974-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Montello, WI?
Montello is surrounded by some of central Wisconsin's most loved campgrounds. Wilderness Campground at N1499 State Hwy 22 has hundreds of sites, multiple lakes, a pool, and a jumping pillow, perfect for families. Buffalo Lake Camping Resort at 555 Lake Avenue offers lakefront sites and accepts big rigs. Lake Arrowhead Campground at W781 Fox Court features full hookups and pull-throughs. For something quieter, Kilby Lake Campground on Fern Avenue delivers a relaxed, fishing-focused vibe with full-hookup sites. Buckhorn State Park, about 30 miles west, adds a peaceful state-park option on Castle Rock Flowage. Pro tip: lakefront sites at Buffalo Lake book fastest, so reserve as soon as your RV camping Montello dates are set.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/buckhornWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Montello?
Late May through early October is prime RV season in Montello, with July and August averaging highs of 80 to 84°F and comfortable 60°F nights, ideal for lakefront camping. June brings the fewest mosquitoes and lush green countryside, while September delivers cooler 70°F days and stunning fall color along the Fox River and Daggett Park's granite quarry waterfalls. Most local campgrounds operate roughly April 15 through October 15, so plan within that window for full hookups. Winters dip well below freezing and most parks close, but a few RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs for ice-fishing trips on Buffalo Lake or Lake Puckaway. Pro tip: book the weekend after Labor Day for warm water, empty trails, and the lowest summer rates.
weather.gov/mkx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Montello?
You'll do great, Montello is one of the easiest places in Wisconsin to learn. Roads like Highway 22, Highway 23, and County Road C are flat, low-traffic, and well-paved, with no mountain passes or city congestion to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, generator use, awning operation, hookups, and the dump station, so you're never left guessing. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, or go with delivery so you don't have to drive at all. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around the Marquette County fairgrounds before heading to your campsite to build confidence.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/drivers/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering things like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. If something happens between Montello and, say, Wisconsin Dells, just call the number in your trip details and help is dispatched. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about systems like the water pump or slide-out. For medical or emergency situations, dial 911, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office in Montello provides local response. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's make, model, and license plate at pickup so you can share details fast if you ever need a tow truck rolling your way.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/511-travel-info.aspxCan I take my Montello RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Montello across state lines is totally doable and very popular. Many hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, so you can easily roll into Minnesota's North Shore, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or Illinois without issue. Cross-border trips into Canada are sometimes allowed but depend on the host's policy and insurance, so confirm in writing through the RVezy messaging system before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: from Montello, Minneapolis is about 280 miles, Mackinac Island is 360 miles, and Chicago is 200 miles, all classic Midwest RV routes with great campgrounds along the way.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in central Wisconsin?
Budgeting fuel for a Montello RV trip is pretty predictable. Travel trailers towed behind your own truck won't change your MPG dramatically, while Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Wisconsin gas prices recently averaged around $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon, often a bit cheaper at stations along I-39 in Portage or Westfield than in tourist hubs like the Dells. For a 300-mile round trip from Montello to Door County and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $115 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Endeavor or Oxford on your way south to I-39, prices there tend to beat in-town pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Montello?
For peak summer weekends, especially July 4th and the Marquette County Fair in mid-July, book your campsite 3 to 6 months ahead. Wisconsin State Parks like nearby Buckhorn and Mill Bluff use the Going to Camp reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, which opens an 11-month rolling window, so serious planners can lock dates almost a year out. Private parks like Wilderness Campground and Buffalo Lake Camping Resort take direct reservations and fill fast for holiday weekends. Midweek and shoulder-season trips often have same-week availability. Pro tip: if your dream site is taken, set up an Availability Alert on the DNR reservation site to catch cancellations, they pop up constantly as summer approaches.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/faqWhat are the local driving conditions like around Montello?
Driving an RV around Montello is refreshingly easy. The terrain is gently rolling farmland, highways are wide and lightly trafficked, and you won't deal with mountain grades or tight switchbacks. Watch for deer, especially at dawn and dusk on Highway 22 and County Road C, since Marquette County has a large whitetail population. In summer, sudden thunderstorms can roll through quickly, so check the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan forecast before long drives. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, when most campgrounds close. Pro tip: avoid driving big rigs through narrow downtown Montello near Daggett Park during the Saturday flea market season; park on the outskirts and walk in to enjoy the granite quarry waterfalls.
511wi.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Montello?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds throughout the Montello area. Most parks like Wilderness Campground, Lake Arrowhead, and Buffalo Lake Camping Resort offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and laundry. Many also have pools, swim ponds, beaches, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi. For where to park an RV in Montello with a dump station, all the major private parks include one for guests, and you can fill fresh water at the same hookup. State campgrounds use the Going to Camp reservation system and provide vault or flush toilets plus dump stations. Pro tip: Lake Arrowhead is big-rig friendly with pull-throughs, ideal if you're driving a 35-foot Class A for the first time.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat features and amenities come inside a typical RV rental in Montello?
You'll be pleasantly surprised by how loaded modern RVs are. Most motorhome rental Montello listings include a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people; air conditioning and a furnace; a TV and often a Bluetooth stereo. Many include a generator for boondocking, plus seatbelts at travel positions so kids ride safely. Smaller Class B campervans pack the same essentials into a Mercedes-style chassis, perfect for couples. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in rural Marquette County, so hosts often include a hotspot or you can tether your phone. Pro tip: check the listing photos closely for outdoor amenities like awnings, bike racks, and outdoor kitchens, ideal for lakeside cookouts.
travelwisconsin.com/central/marquette-county/montelloWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Montello rental?
Hosts offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, portable grills, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for Buffalo Lake), camp chairs, fire pits, and even pre-stocked pantry kits. Some hosts include these for free; others charge a small flat fee. Pickup and drop-off times are set by the host and shown on the listing, with most offering flexible windows between 10 AM and 5 PM. Mileage policies vary, with 100 to 150 free miles per night being typical and unlimited mileage available on some rigs. Pro tip: ask your host to throw in fishing gear, Marquette County is nicknamed the Shore Fishing Capital of Wisconsin.
travelmarquettecounty.com/things-to-do/How do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card during booking, and your funds stay protected until your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is held on your card a few days before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, typically within 7 days. Deposit amounts vary by RV class but generally range from $500 to $1,500. To avoid any deposit issues, take dated photos of the rig at pickup and drop-off, refuel to the agreed level, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: review the listing's policies and walkthrough checklist together with your host so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Montello?
Montello is perfectly placed for classic Wisconsin road trips. Wisconsin Dells sits just 35 miles southwest for waterparks and the Wisconsin River. Devil's Lake State Park is 50 miles south with quartzite bluffs and one of the Midwest's best swim beaches. Door County's lighthouses and cherry orchards are about 160 miles northeast. The Mississippi River bluffs near La Crosse are 140 miles west, and Madison's lakes and farmers market are 70 miles south. Closer to home, John Muir Memorial County Park near Ennis Lake honors the famed naturalist who grew up nearby. Pro tip: a 4-day loop from Montello through the Dells, Devil's Lake, and back via Madison hits three of Wisconsin's most iconic stops without burning a tank of gas.
