Campgrounds near North Freedom
North Freedom sits in Sauk County within the Baraboo Hills, a short drive from Devil's Lake State Park, one of the most visited state parks in Wisconsin. The village is best known as the home of the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, an outdoor living history museum that recreates late 1800s and early 1900s railroading with scenic train rides. For RV travelers, the location works as a quiet base for exploring the bluffs, lakes, and the Wisconsin Dells corridor to the north.
Campground options in the area range from full-service private resorts to state park sites. Baraboo RV Resort By Rjourney and Baraboo RV Resort offer the closest full-hookup RV parks, while Green Valley Campground, Skillet Creek Campground, and Dell Pines Campground provide additional private options within a short drive.
Devil's Lake State Park anchors public camping in the region, with three regular campgrounds totaling 423 sites that each accommodate a family of one to six individuals. Baraboo itself serves as the main hub for groceries, fuel, laundromats, and restaurants.
Things to do near North Freedom
Devil's Lake State Park is the primary draw. The park has 29 miles of trails, two sandy beaches, boat and kayak rentals, designated mountain biking loops, rock climbing on quartzite bluffs, fishing, and birdwatching, plus winter skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding. Trails range from flat lakeside paths to strenuous bluff climbs, so families can pick a route that matches ability.
In North Freedom itself, the Mid-Continent Railway Museum runs a 7-mile, 55-minute round-trip ride aboard preserved railroad cars, with seasonal themed events including autumn color trains and a Santa Express in November and December. Natural Bridge State Park, Parfrey's Glen, and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail add more hiking options within a short drive.
Wisconsin Dells, about 30 minutes north, provides waterparks, boat tours, and family attractions when a rain day forces a change of plan.

The camping season runs primarily from spring through fall. At Devil's Lake, the Northern Lights and Ice Age Campgrounds typically close in October and reopen around April, while the Quartzite Campground remains open year-round for winter camping with limited services. Potable water, flush toilets, and showers are not available during the off-season, so shoulder-season and winter RV trips need to plan for reduced facilities.
Summer weekends are the busiest period. Devil's Lake State Park often fills up every weekend May through October, along with many summer weekdays. Fall brings peak color through the Baraboo Hills and Mid-Continent Railway's autumn color trains, while spring can bring a nuisance: late-spring lake-fly hatches can be intense, and while they don't bite, they will ruin a picnic.
Winter camping is limited but possible, with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing available on and around the lake.

How to book campgrounds near North Freedom
For Devil's Lake State Park, all campsites are reservable with no walk-up sites, and reservations can be made online or by phone up to 11 months in advance. Reserve a campsite online through the Wisconsin State Park reservation portal at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A vehicle admission pass is required for every motor vehicle brought into the property.
Popular summer weekends book out quickly once the 11-month window opens. If Devil's Lake is full, the Notify Me feature on the reservation portal alerts campers when a cancellation opens a site on their dates. Cancellations continue to trickle in up to arrival day.
Private parks such as Baraboo RV Resort By Rjourney, Baraboo RV Resort, Green Valley Campground, Skillet Creek Campground, and Dell Pines Campground book directly through their own systems and often have availability when the state park is sold out.
What to expect
Sites at Devil's Lake State Park are basic by RV-resort standards. Each campsite has a picnic table, a gravel or paved area for parking, room for at least one family tent, and a metal fire ring. Campsites are not within sight of the lake. Some loops have electric hookups; none have full hookups, so plan water and waste use accordingly.
Expect crowds in peak season. Day-use lots fill early on summer weekends, and campground loops can be busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are noticeably quieter.
Private campgrounds in the North Freedom and Baraboo area typically offer full hookups, showers, laundry, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable in the villages and along main roads but can drop inside the bluffs and wooded park interior.
