Campgrounds and RV parks near Reeseville, WI

Birding drives the trip for most visitors. Horicon Marsh is home to more than 300 species of birds and a diversity of other wildlife species. The refuge's three-mile paved auto tour, located on Highway 49 east of Waupun, opens to vehicles March 16 and closes to vehicles the day before deer gun season in late November, weather permitting. On foot, over five miles of designated hiking trails cross forest, prairie, and wetland habitats, including a storybook trail and a wetland boardwalk where Canada geese, wood duck, marsh wren, and painted turtles are commonly in close view from spring to fall. On the water, a paddle trail of roughly six to seven miles along the Rock River runs through the core of the marsh and often provides views of bald eagles, great blue herons, and state-endangered black terns. Families staying at The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh can use the on-site indoor pool, two playgrounds, boat rentals, and shore fishing. Silver Springs Campsites adds swimming and additional lakeside recreation for kids. Hunting and fishing are also permitted on much of the state Wildlife Area under Wisconsin DNR rules.

The camping season around Reeseville runs essentially from May through October. Most private campgrounds, including The Playful Goose, operate from spring through fall, while the refuge itself is open to day use year-round for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Spring shoulder trips can be productive for birders but wet, and Wisconsin's variable weather requires preparation, particularly for early-season camping when sites can become waterlogged. Spring and fall migration are the marquee wildlife windows. During spring and fall, hundreds of thousands of ducks, including mallard, green-winged teal, northern pintail, and gadwall, along with tens of thousands of Canada geese and sandhill cranes, migrate through Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival, typically held in May, draws advance-registration crowds; if that overlaps with planned dates, book early. Summer weekends are the busiest window for private campgrounds, and fall color weekends fill fast. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and fall color season. Late fall brings deer gun season, which closes the refuge auto tour route to vehicles.

Expect flat to gently rolling farmland, wooded river corridors, and open wetland vistas rather than dramatic terrain. Campground styles vary: The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh is a long-running family park with shaded and open sites on the Rock River, water, electric, and sewer available, an indoor heated pool at no charge to campers, two playgrounds, horseshoes, volleyball, and shuffleboard. Silver Springs Campsites runs a busier, activity-heavy operation. Sites at some parks are large and grassy; others are tighter or shared with seasonal campers. Families wanting a quieter feel may prefer The Playful Goose Campground of the Horicon Marsh, River Bend RV Resort, or Whistle Stop Campground. Bring bug protection in warm months, a bike for the marsh trails and auto tour, and a leash for pets, which are permitted on refuge trails but must be leashed at all times.
