Campgrounds and RV parks near Sullivan, WI

The Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit is the main outdoor draw. Visitors hike the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, ride the Scuppernong, John Muir, and Emma Carlin trail systems, and paddle or fish the kettle lakes. Swimming beaches, boat launches, and picnic areas are open through the warm months. The Bark River runs through the area and offers flatwater paddling and shore fishing. Family-friendly stops within a short drive include the Fireside Dinner Theatre in Fort Atkinson, Aztalan State Park's ancient earthen mounds, and Old World Wisconsin, a large open-air history museum in Eagle. Sullivan is also close to Alpine Valley Music Theatre, a major outdoor concert venue that brings summer traffic and often fills nearby campgrounds on show weekends.

The primary RV camping season in the Sullivan area runs from late April or early May through October. Private campgrounds around town typically open around the Wisconsin fishing opener in early May and close after the fall color season. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends and Alpine Valley concert dates booking out first. Spring can be wet, with muddy trails and cool overnight lows. Summer brings warm, humid days that suit swimming, paddling, and evening campfires, along with the region's typical afternoon thunderstorm activity. September and early October are prime for cooler nights, fall color across the Kettle Moraine, and easier last-minute booking. Winter camping is limited. Most private parks close for the season, though the Wisconsin DNR keeps state-forest sites reservable year-round. Ottawa Lake is the only year-round campground in the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit, with a limited number of plowed sites, a winter vault toilet, and a spigot providing water. Snow-covered trails support cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.

Private parks near Sullivan generally offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, and family amenities such as pools, playgrounds, and camp stores. Sites range from open, grassy pull-throughs to shaded back-ins along the Bark River and small lakes. Many parks host a mix of seasonal and short-stay campers. State-forest campgrounds are more rustic. Pinewoods has around 100 non-electric sites with flush toilets, vault toilets, and showers, but no electricity at the sites. Whitewater Lake is a primitive campground with 63 sites, pit toilets, no showers, and a sanitary dump station. Cell coverage is usable but uneven under heavy tree cover. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent. Only certified firewood or wood sourced from within 10 miles of the park is allowed on state properties, a rule that helps limit the spread of emerald ash borer and other pests.
