Camping near Wonewoc, Wisconsin
Wonewoc sits in Wisconsin's Driftless Area, a region of ridges, sandstone bluffs, and narrow river valleys that escaped the last glaciation. The village is roughly 30 minutes west of Wisconsin Dells and serves as a practical basecamp for RV travelers exploring the 400 State Trail, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, and the Kickapoo River corridor.
Campground options nearby range from full-service RV resorts to rustic state park sites. Chapparal Campground And Resort, on the edge of town, is oriented to families and offers cabins alongside RV and tent sites. Tunnel Trail Campground, between Wilton and Kendall, sits near the Elroy-Sparta bike trail and offers RV sites, tent sites, and cabins.
For state park camping, Mill Bluff State Park to the northeast protects glacial-era sandstone bluffs and has a small rustic campground, while Wildcat Mountain State Park to the west includes Horse Camp - Wildcat Mountain State Park for equestrian travelers. Oakdale KOA Journey, closer to Interstate 90/94, is a convenient overnight stop for RVers routing through the region.
Things to do around Wonewoc
Cycling is the marquee activity. The Elroy-Sparta State Trail is highlighted by three railroad tunnels over 140 years old; the tunnels near Kendall and Wilton are each about a quarter-mile long, and the tunnel between Norwalk and Sparta is about three-quarters of a mile. Flashlights and jackets are recommended, since the tunnels stay dark and cool even on bright days. The 400 State Trail runs south from Elroy through Wonewoc to Reedsburg on the same crushed-limestone surface.
State parks add hiking and paddling. Mill Bluff is known for its steep sandstone bluffs, a spring-fed swimming pond, and short interpretive hiking. Wildcat Mountain State Park offers hiking, horseback riding, and an overlook above the Kickapoo River valley. The Kickapoo River, popular for lazy paddling, runs through the valley below with rentals available in Ontario.

The core RV season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Mill Bluff State Park has a rustic family campground with 21 campsites, open late May through September. The horse campground at Wildcat Mountain is open May 1 to November 14 annually, and its horse trails run on the same schedule.
Summer weekends are the busiest window, especially July and early August, when trail traffic peaks and family-oriented resorts fill first. Fall brings cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and hardwood color across the Driftless ridges through October. The three tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail are closed annually from November 1 to April 30, which effectively ends through-trail cycling for the year.
Winter camping options are limited. Most private parks close, state park family campgrounds thin out to a few walk-in or primitive options, and snow cover typically sets in from late November into March. Shoulder-season travelers should confirm water availability, since many campgrounds shut off hydrants once freezing overnight temperatures return.

How to book campgrounds near Wonewoc
Wisconsin state park campsites, including Mill Bluff and Wildcat Mountain, are booked through the state's reservation system. Reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance by calling toll-free (888) 947-2757, or online through the Wisconsin State Park reservation portal. A vehicle admission sticker is required, and cyclists 16 and older need a state trail pass in addition to camping fees.
Private campgrounds such as Chapparal Campground And Resort, Tunnel Trail Campground, and Oakdale KOA Journey are booked directly through the campground website or the KOA reservation system. Holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out earliest, so lock in dates several months ahead for peak summer stays. For Horse Camp - Wildcat Mountain State Park, reserve early since it holds only 24 equestrian sites, all of which can be reserved in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is hilly by Midwestern standards. Sites in the Driftless Area are often terraced or sloped, and RV travelers should carry leveling blocks. State park sites tend to be rustic: Mill Bluff has vault toilets and hand pumps, no showers, and only six of the 21 sites have electric hookups. Private resorts closer to Wonewoc typically offer full hookups, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the valleys and inside state parks, so download maps and reservations before arrival. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, particularly in wooded and grassy areas. Firewood movement is restricted under Wisconsin rules; buy locally near the campground rather than hauling wood from home.
Expect quiet nights, dark skies for stargazing, and a mix of cyclists, families, and equestrian travelers depending on which park you choose.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wonewoc, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wonewoc, WI?

Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295 per night, and luxury Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. Since Wonewoc sits on the 400 State Trail and is just 30 minutes from Wisconsin Dells, weekends in July and August book up fastest and command peak pricing. For a cheap RV rental in Wonewoc, aim for May, early June, or after Labor Day when Driftless Region foliage starts turning. Pro tip: booking a Sunday-through-Thursday stretch often shaves 15 to 25 percent off your nightly rate, and many hosts waive cleaning fees on stays of five nights or more.
travelwisconsin.com/central/juneau-county/wonewocDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Wonewoc, WI?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Wonewoc. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation exempts recreational vehicle operators from a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as long as the motorhome, fifth wheel, or touring mobile home is 45 feet or shorter and isn't used commercially. Since virtually every rig on RVezy falls well under that limit, your standard Class D license works perfectly. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're cleared to cruise the Driftless Region.

Every RV rental in Wonewoc booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head to the 400 State Trail trailhead with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you meaningful peace of mind. At checkout you choose from different protection tiers based on how much coverage feels right for your trip, whether you are staying put at Chapparal RV Resort or doing a loop through the Dells. You select your coverage level, not the host, so you stay in control. Pro tip: many first-time renters pick a mid-tier plan for added confidence on those scenic Highway 33 ridge drives.

Booking an RV rental in Wonewoc is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, so you always know what to expect. There is a grace-period window right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund options depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund. If plans shift, open your booking on RVezy and you will see your options laid out clearly. Pro tip: lock in a popular rig early since you are protected by that grace period anyway.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Wonewoc is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs whose owners genuinely welcome four-legged co-pilots. Wonewoc is a dog's dream because Chapparal RV Resort is openly dog-friendly, the 400 State Trail allows leashed pets along its entire 22-mile crushed-limestone path from Reedsburg to Elroy, and the Baraboo River offers plenty of shallow swimming spots. Devil's Lake State Park, about 45 minutes east, also welcomes leashed dogs on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and ask about their preferred cleanup routine, then enjoy those scenic Driftless walks together.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petfriendlyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Wonewoc?
Yes, RV delivery in Wonewoc is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Chapparal RV Resort, Wonewoc Legion Park, or a private property near the 400 State Trail. They will level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, then walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number so they can confirm the site fits the rig's length.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wonewoc%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive on a Wonewoc RV rental?

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wonewoc%2C%20WisconsinWhere should I camp with my RV near Wonewoc?
You have great options for the best campgrounds near Wonewoc. Chapparal RV Resort on Dreamland Drive is the local favorite, with full hookups, a pool and splash area, sandy beach, and pull-through sites that fit big rigs (open seasonally, roughly mid-April through October). Wonewoc Legion Park and Bakers Field Campground sit right on the 400 State Trail and are great for budget-friendly overnights. Within a 30 to 45 minute drive you will also find Mill Bluff State Park, Tunnel Trail Campground in Wilton, and Mirror Lake State Park near the Dells. Pro tip: reserve Chapparal at least 8 weeks ahead for summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July, when sites vanish fast.
chapparalcampgroundresort.com/When is the best time for an RV trip to Wonewoc, WI?
Late May through mid-October is prime season for RV camping in Wonewoc, with the sweet spot being June and September. Summer highs hover in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit with warm, humid evenings perfect for campfires, while September brings 65 to 75 degree days and crisp 45-degree nights, ideal for biking the 400 State Trail under turning maples. Peak fall color in the Driftless Region usually arrives the first two weeks of October. Winters drop well below freezing with regular snow, so most local hosts and Chapparal RV Resort operate April through October. Pro tip: book the third weekend of September for the magic combo of warm days, cool nights, and zero summer crowds.
weather.gov/arx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Wonewoc?
You'll do great, Wonewoc is genuinely one of the friendliest places in Wisconsin to learn. Roads around the village are low-traffic, mostly flat to gently rolling, and Highway 33 and Highway 80 give you wide lanes with easy sightlines through the Driftless ridges. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the dump valve, so you're never figuring things out alone. You can also message your host any time during the trip. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first time renting an RV here, and plan an easy first night at Chapparal RV Resort just 3 miles from downtown.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/safety-tools.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You are covered around the clock: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire on Highway 33, a dead battery at Chapparal RV Resort, or a lockout at the Wonewoc Legion Park trailhead. The roadside team handles towing, jumpstarts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockouts. Your host is also a great first call for quick questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave town since cell coverage can get spotty in some Driftless valleys.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Wonewoc RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most Wonewoc hosts welcome interstate travel, so an RV road trip from Wonewoc into Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is totally doable. Popular routes include the Great River Road along the Mississippi, the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin (about 5 hours north), and the Driftless loop through northeast Iowa. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so confirm with the host directly through the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: share your full route with the host at booking so they can confirm coverage and adjust mileage if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Wonewoc?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy: travel trailers towed by a pickup average 10 to 14 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, Class B campervans hit 16 to 20 mpg, and big Class A rigs land around 7 to 10 mpg. Wisconsin gas prices typically sit close to the national average, and you'll find affordable fill-ups at the Kwik Trip in Elroy (7 miles north) and stations in Mauston (9 miles) just off I-90/94. Because Wonewoc is rural, top off whenever you pass a station. Pro tip: download the Kwik Trip app for member fuel discounts, they have the most reliable diesel and DEF availability in this corner of Juneau County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wonewoc?
Book early and you'll stress less: Chapparal RV Resort fills summer weekends 6 to 10 weeks out, with holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day often booking 3 to 4 months ahead. For Wisconsin state parks within driving range (Mill Bluff, Devil's Lake, Mirror Lake, Wildcat Mountain), reserve through Wisconsin DNR's ReserveAmerica system, which opens 11 months in advance and goes fast for summer Fridays and Saturdays. Public sites at Wonewoc Legion Park and Bakers Field are first-come, first-served and remain easier to grab midweek. Pro tip: if summer is full, target the second week of September, you'll find open sites, perfect weather, and trail access without the crowds.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Wonewoc?
Driving around Wonewoc is genuinely pleasant: Highway 33 and Highway 80 are well-paved two-lane rural roads with gentle curves and ridge-top views through the Driftless Region. The terrain rolls but never gets steep enough to challenge an RV, and traffic is light outside of summer Saturday afternoons near Wisconsin Dells. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk (this is prime deer country), and slow down on the narrow Baraboo River bridges in town. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, which is why most RV trips happen April through October. Pro tip: avoid Highway 12 through downtown Dells on summer Saturdays and take County A through Reedsburg instead, it's faster and far less stressful.

Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a smooth RV camping Wonewoc experience. Chapparal RV Resort offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric), an on-site dump station, hot showers, laundry, a heated pool and splash waterpark, plus Wi-Fi near the main lodge. Wonewoc Legion Park has two electric sites, potable water, restrooms, and grills, while Bakers Field offers basic tent-style amenities. For dump stations and fresh water on the road, the Kwik Trip in Mauston and the Mill Bluff State Park dump station (15 miles north) are reliable stops. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving Chapparal, dump and fresh-water stations are sparse once you head west into the Kickapoo Valley.

Many include awnings, leveling jacks, outdoor speakers, and a TV with DVD or streaming setup. Pickup and dropoff are usually handled at the host's home or property, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at pickup. Mileage policies are clearly listed on each rental page so there are no surprises. Pro tip: ask about a kayak or bike add-on, the Baraboo River and 400 State Trail are right in downtown Wonewoc.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wonewoc%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps everything protected and trackable. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before your trip starts (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig), and it is released back to you after the trip ends assuming no damage or policy violations. The deposit amount is clearly shown on every Wonewoc listing before you confirm. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with the host, timestamped photos are the easiest way to ensure your full deposit comes back fast.
