Camping near Afton, Wyoming
Afton sits in Star Valley in western Wyoming's Lincoln County, on the floor of a mountain valley between the Salt River Range and the Wyoming Range at roughly 6,200 feet. The town is best known for the elk antler arch spanning U.S. Highway 89, and for a nearby intermittent spring in Swift Creek Canyon that cycles on and off through much of the year.
RV travelers use Afton as a base for the surrounding Bridger-Teton National Forest and as a quieter, lower-cost alternative to Jackson, roughly 75 miles north. Star Valley Ranch RV Park and Wolf Den RV Park sit closest to town, with Greys River Cove RV Park positioned for anglers heading up the Greys River corridor. Montpelier Creek KOA Journey lies southwest across the Idaho line for travelers approaching from Bear Lake, and Hideout Motel and RV offers a small in-town option. The Bridger-Teton National Forest is a short drive away and offers hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, and the Salt River provides trout fishing and calm water for kayaking or canoeing.
Things to do around Afton
The Salt River and Greys River draw anglers for cutthroat and brown trout, and both rivers see kayak and raft use during summer flows. The Greys River Road runs almost 60 miles from Alpine south to Tri Basin Divide, providing access to fishing, hiking, OHV riding, and horseback trails in the Wyoming and Salt River Ranges.
In town, families visit the elk antler arch on Highway 89 and the periodic Intermittent Spring in Swift Creek Canyon, one of very few rhythmic springs in the world. The Star Valley Historical Society and Museum in Afton covers early settlers and Native American artifacts. Day trips reach Palisades Reservoir for boating, Bear Lake for swimming, and Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park to the north. Golf courses and pickleball are available at the Star Valley Ranch resort area.

Star Valley has a short, mild summer and a long, snowy winter at high elevation. In Afton, summers are warm, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are cold, snowy, and partly cloudy. Most private RV parks operate from late spring through early fall. Star Valley Ranch RV Park runs its main season from May into October, with July as the busiest month.
Forest Service campgrounds along the Greys River and elsewhere in the Bridger-Teton generally see their main season of use between Memorial Day and Labor Day. July and August bring the driest weather and reliable road access to higher elevations, while June can still see rain, mud, and lingering snow on passes. September delivers cool nights, fall color in the aspens, and lighter traffic before campgrounds close for the season.
Winter travel is possible for snowmobilers and ice anglers, but most RV parks close, water systems are winterized, and mountain roads such as the upper Greys River corridor are not maintained for passenger vehicles.
Booking an RV site near Afton
Private RV parks in and around Afton, including Star Valley Ranch RV Park, Wolf Den RV Park, Greys River Cove RV Park, and Hideout Motel and RV, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer demand is driven by travelers also visiting Grand Teton and Jackson Hole, so booking two to three months ahead is prudent for July and August, and earlier for holiday weekends.
Montpelier Creek KOA Journey is bookable through the KOA reservation system. Developed Forest Service campgrounds elsewhere on the Bridger-Teton are generally handled through Recreation.gov, but the Greys River corridor works differently: all campgrounds in the Greys River Corridor have a 16-day stay limit, and no reservations are accepted. Plan to arrive early on Friday for a weekend site.
What to expect on the ground
Afton sits at high elevation with cool nights even in midsummer, so RV renters should pack layers and check that furnace propane is topped off. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, and wind gusts are a routine feature of Wyoming camping, so awnings should be retracted when sites are unattended.
This is grizzly and black bear country. In front-country areas such as campgrounds and trailheads, food and other attractants must be locked in vehicles with the windows closed, in a hard-sided trailer or structure inaccessible to a bear, or stored in bear-proof food boxes provided at many front-country sites.
Cell coverage is reliable in Afton itself and along Highway 89 but drops off quickly up Greys River Road and in side canyons. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are available in Afton and Thayne; the next full-service stops north are Alpine and Jackson.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Afton, WY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Afton, WY?
An RV rental in Afton is one of the best values in the Greater Yellowstone region, often less than comparable rigs in Jackson Hole about 70 miles north. Expect roughly $95 to $175 per night for travel trailers and campervans, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250 to $400 for larger Class A coaches. Hosts set their own pricing, so weekly discounts and shoulder-season deals in May and late September can trim costs further. For a cheap RV rental Afton, try weekday pickups and start your trip here before heading into the Tetons to save compared to renting out of Jackson.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Afton%2C%20WyomingWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Afton?
A standard driver's license is all you need for nearly every RV rental in Afton. Wyoming does not require a special license for typical recreational RVs, and the vast majority of rigs on RVezy (Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A models) are drivable on a standard license. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Your valid home-country license is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Upload your ID during booking and you are set, no DMV trips or special endorsements needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Afton protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Afton includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered wherever your Star Valley adventure takes you. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (you pick, not the host), so you can dial coverage up for a long Yellowstone loop or keep it lean for a quick weekend at Cottonwood Lake. The plan provides meaningful financial protection for things like a chipped windshield on US-89 or a curb scuff, so you can book confidently and focus on the Tetons ahead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Afton RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Afton is low-risk thanks to RVezy's platform-wide cancellation policy. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules, RVezy does, and there is a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. If plans shift, reach out to RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Tip: book early to lock in the best Star Valley rigs, then refine your dates as your itinerary comes together.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Afton RV trip?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Afton is easy to find. Filter for Pet-Friendly on RVezy and you will see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too), often for a small cleaning fee. Star Valley is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Wyoming: Bridger-Teton National Forest trails like Swift Creek and Periodic Spring allow leashed dogs, and Cottonwood Lake offers shoreline space your pup will love. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks restrict dogs to paved roads and parking areas, so plan hikes in the national forest instead. Pack a tie-out, extra water, and vaccination records and you are ready to roll.
fs.usda.gov/btnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or cabin in Afton?
Yes, RV delivery in Afton is a popular option and a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many Star Valley hosts will drive the rig to your spot, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Common delivery destinations include Allred Flat Campground, Swift Creek Campground, and private cabins around Smoot and Thayne. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile round-trip, with some hosts offering free delivery within Afton. Message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm distance and pricing, then arrive, unpack, and start your trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038214714-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Afton?
Plenty far, Afton is one of the best launch points for a Wyoming RV road trip. Jackson sits about 70 miles north on the scenic US-89 Star Valley corridor, Grand Teton National Park's Moose Entrance is roughly 90 miles, and Yellowstone's South Entrance is about 130 miles. Heading the other way, Salt Lake City is around 200 miles south and Bear Lake is about 60 miles. Hosts set their own mileage policies: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you are planning the full Tetons-Yellowstone loop, ask the host about a mileage package.
nps.gov/grte/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Afton for RVs?
The best campgrounds near Afton mix national forest charm with full-hookup convenience. Top picks for RV camping in Afton include Allred Flat Campground (Bridger-Teton National Forest, south of Afton, seasonal), Swift Creek Campground (just east of town with trout fishing nearby), Cottonwood Lake Campground (high-elevation site in the Salt River Range), and private RV parks in the Star Valley area offering full hookups and big-rig friendly sites. Forest service sites are first-come or reserved through Recreation.gov, while private parks take direct bookings. Tip: secure your spot two to four months ahead for July and August.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time to rent an RV in Afton?
Mid-June through mid-September is the sweet spot for an Afton RV trip, when daytime highs typically sit in the 70s Fahrenheit and nights cool to the 40s, perfect for campfires under clear Star Valley skies. July is the warmest and driest month. May and late September deliver wildflowers or golden aspens and lower rental rates, but pack layers, snow can still fall over Salt River Pass. Afton sits above 6,000 feet and receives heavy winter snowfall, so winter trips require a four-season rig. For first-timers, aim for late June to early September and you will hit it just right.
weather.gov/riw/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Afton?
You will do great, Afton is one of the easiest places in the country for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, US-89 through Star Valley is wide and well-paved, and there are no tight switchbacks or dense urban driving like you would face in larger cities. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and dump procedures, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup so your first time behind the wheel is just a short drive to camp. Tip: take a 15-minute practice loop around Afton before heading toward Salt River Pass and you will feel confident in no time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-89, a dead battery at Cottonwood Lake, or a propane issue at Allred Flat, one call gets help dispatched. Cell service is solid in Afton and along US-89 toward Jackson but can be spotty in the Greys River backcountry, so screenshot the RVezy support number before heading off-grid. Your host is also just a message away and often knows the closest mechanic or RV shop in town. Most issues are minor and resolved quickly so you can get back to enjoying your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Afton RV rental into Idaho, Utah, or across the Canadian border?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Afton's location near the Idaho border makes a multi-state RV road trip from Afton easy. Popular routes include Bear Lake (about 60 miles), Palisades Reservoir in Idaho (around 45 miles), Lava Hot Springs (about 95 miles), and the full Yellowstone loop through Montana. Canada is allowed by some hosts depending on their coverage, so message the host before booking if you are heading to Banff or Waterton. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Stick to the U.S. and Canada and you have endless mountain country to explore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for gas on an Afton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items on any Wyoming RV trip, so plan ahead. Class B campervans average roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG. Wyoming gas prices typically track near the national average, and Afton has several stations on US-89. Tip: fill up in Afton before heading into Grand Teton or Yellowstone, fuel inside the parks and in Jackson often runs noticeably more per gallon. For a 5-day loop covering about 600 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $275 for gas depending on current prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Afton?
For peak summer (July and August), book Bridger-Teton National Forest campgrounds two to four months ahead through Recreation.gov, the federal reservation system. Private parks in Star Valley take direct reservations and often have more late availability. If you are aiming for Grand Teton or Yellowstone campgrounds, book six months out the moment Recreation.gov opens that window, as those fill within minutes. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) at Bridger-Teton sites can have walk-up availability even in summer, so build flexibility into your itinerary and you can still snag a creekside spot when reservations are gone.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the local driving conditions like around Afton?
Driving in Star Valley is mellow compared to most mountain destinations. US-89 is a wide two-lane highway with generous shoulders, and Afton itself has minimal traffic. Two things to watch: Salt River Pass between Afton and Cokeville can get icy from fall through spring, and the Snake River Canyon stretch between Alpine and Jackson has curves and occasional rockfall, drive it in daylight your first time. Wildlife crossings are real: moose, deer, and elk are most active at dawn and dusk, so reduce speed and use high beams when safe. Insider tip: check WYDOT's 511 road conditions before any shoulder-season trip and you will not be caught off-guard.
map.wyoroad.info/What amenities should I expect at Afton-area campgrounds?
Campgrounds near Afton range from rustic forest sites to full-resort experiences. Bridger-Teton National Forest sites (Swift Creek, Allred Flat, Cottonwood Lake) typically offer vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and potable water but no hookups, ideal for self-contained RVs. Private parks in Star Valley provide full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), WiFi, showers, and laundry. For dump stations and freshwater fills between trips, most private parks allow day-use dumping for a small fee. Tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose, surge protector, and sewer hose support, hosts usually include the basics but having backups means nothing slows down your Afton adventure.
fs.usda.gov/btnfWhat features and amenities come with an Afton RV rental?
Most motorhome rental Afton listings come well-equipped for mountain camping. Expect a queen or king bed, a dinette or sofa that converts to extra sleeping, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, propane furnace (essential at over 6,000 feet, even in summer), air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many rigs include a generator, solar setup, or both, plus outdoor chairs. WiFi and TVs vary by host. Listing pages spell out exactly what is included, and you can filter by sleeps count to match your group. Tip: confirm the rig has a working heater, Afton nights drop into the 30s and 40s even in midsummer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Afton%2C%20WyomingWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts in Afton offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, fishing gear, kid car seats, and propane refills. Pickup is typically from the host's address in the Star Valley area, with delivery and setup widely available (often free within town, mileage-based beyond). Most hosts offer afternoon pickup and late-morning drop-off, and many will flex by an hour or two if you ask in advance. Mileage policies vary: 100 to 150 free miles per night is common, with extra miles billed per mile. Check each listing's policies and message the host with questions before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Afton%2C%20WyomingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy charges your card at the time of booking through the platform, no cash handoffs or wire transfers to hosts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized before pickup, then released after drop-off assuming the rig is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off, return it with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the holding tanks if your rental requires it. Tip: do the walkthrough with your host and note any existing scuffs in the RVezy app for a smooth, stress-free return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Afton during winter, and how do I stay warm?
Yes, winter RV camping in Afton can be a magical adventure if your rig is prepped for it. Afton sees heavy winter snowfall with cold January lows, so look for listings advertising four-season or arctic packages: heated holding tanks, enclosed underbelly, insulated windows, and a strong furnace. Several private parks in the Star Valley area stay open year-round with full hookups, including shore power that keeps your furnace running without draining batteries. Snow King and Grand Targhee ski areas are within about 90 minutes, making Afton a budget-friendly base for a ski trip. Tip: ask the host to fill propane at pickup, a 30-pound tank can burn quickly when temperatures drop below zero.
