Campgrounds and RV parks near Byron, WY

Bighorn Lake is the main draw. Boating, kayaking, and fishing launch from the Horseshoe Bend Marina area, and pullouts along the canyon rim road offer wide views of the canyon and reservoir, including Devil's Overlook. The Pryor Mountain wild horse range north of the canyon is home to one of the country's oldest free-roaming wild horse herds. Hiking trails inside the recreation area range from short interpretive walks to longer routes into the high desert. Day trips reach further: Cody and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West lie roughly an hour west, the East Entrance to Yellowstone is about two hours away, and the Bighorn Mountains rise to the east with waterfalls, alpine lakes, and cooler summer temperatures.

The Bighorn Basin is high, dry, and windy. Summers are hot and mostly clear, with July highs averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit and low humidity. May is the wettest month, though total precipitation stays modest and thunderstorms tend to be brief. This is peak camping season, when the marina area, KOA pool, and Yellowstone's East Entrance are all open. Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons. May brings wildflowers and higher water in Bighorn Lake but also cool nights and lingering snow at elevation. September and early October offer warm days, cool nights, and thinner crowds, and are often considered the most comfortable months for RV travel through the area. The East Entrance to Yellowstone typically closes at the end of October or beginning of November. Winters are cold and snowy at higher elevations, though the basin floor near Byron stays relatively dry. Horseshoe Bend Campground is open year-round, while the Greybull KOA pool operates only from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and most mountain campgrounds close after Labor Day.

Expect open sky, sun, and wind. Sites at Horseshoe Bend are spacious and gravel, with limited shade and strong afternoon winds off the lake. Bring sun protection, and be aware that prairie rattlesnakes are present in the sagebrush; keep pets leashed and check under rigs. Cell service inside the recreation area is spotty at best. The private parks in Greybull and around Byron are more conventional. Greybull KOA Holiday has 32 level concrete RV sites with full hookups up to 50 amp, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a heated pool, laundry, and a camp store. Grocery, fuel, and hardware are available in Lovell, Greybull, and Powell, so restocking between longer drives to Yellowstone or the Bighorns is straightforward.
