Campgrounds near Lovell, Wyoming
Lovell sits in the Bighorn Basin of north-central Wyoming and serves as the primary access town for Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. The South District Visitor Center is located on US Highway 14A in Lovell, and camping options within the recreation area are reached by heading north on Wyoming Highway 37.
Horseshoe Bend Campground is the main RV-friendly option in the park, located about 14 miles north of Lovell on WY Hwy 37, overlooking Bighorn Lake and the red sandstone cliffs of Sykes Mountain. It offers 68 RV and tent sites, 28 sites with water and electrical hook-ups, water guaranteed at those sites Memorial Day to Labor Day, and electricity that remains on year-round, along with a dump station and drinking water. Barrys Landing Trail Creek sits deeper in the south district, 27 miles north of Lovell on Hwy 37, and is primitive: vault toilets only, no running water or electricity, with most RV sites suited to rigs of 28 ft or smaller.
Outside the park, Green Oasis Campground operates in town, and Greybull KOA Holiday lies roughly 50 miles south in Greybull with concrete pads, a pool, and full hookups.
Things to do near Lovell
Bighorn Lake anchors most recreation in the area. The Horseshoe Bend Marina near Lovell is less than a mile from Horseshoe Bend Campground and offers boat rentals and services. Boat ramps at Horseshoe Bend and Barry's Landing provide access for fishing and open-water paddling deeper into the canyon, and boat tours of Bighorn Canyon NRA are offered throughout summer.
On land, WY Hwy 37 north of Lovell reaches the Devil's Canyon Overlook and the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, where a wild horse range maintains about 200 mustangs and bighorn sheep are frequently spotted. Hikes from the campgrounds connect to canyon rim viewpoints and, near Barry's Landing, to the historic Lockhart Ranch. Dark skies across the recreation area make stargazing a common evening activity.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is open year-round, and so are Horseshoe Bend and Barrys Landing Trail Creek. Services scale sharply with the season. At Horseshoe Bend, water is only guaranteed at the hookup sites Memorial Day to Labor Day, though electricity remains on year-round. The Horseshoe Bend Marina and its rental fleet operate on a summer schedule, and end-of-season visitors often find marina services already closed.
Camping fees in the south district generally apply from mid April through October, with the shoulders of that window quieter but with reduced amenities. Summer brings hot, dry high-desert conditions, strong sun with little natural shade at Horseshoe Bend, and afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter is cold and snowy across the basin, with freezing overnight temperatures and limited winter-specific services in the park. Private options such as Greybull KOA Holiday run a seasonal schedule for some amenities: the heated pool is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with reduced off-season activity.
How to book
Reservation systems vary by campground. No reservations are taken at Horseshoe Bend through Recreation.gov; the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, though the concessionaire offers online booking for a limited number of hookup sites. Barry's Landing and Trail Creek does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov either, and all sites are first-come, first-served except one group site that requires advance reservation.
Private campgrounds handle their own booking. Greybull KOA Holiday takes reservations directly through the KOA website; the park is small, so hookup sites and cabins fill in peak summer, and arrivals after 7 p.m. are discouraged because most sites require an escort. For summer trips through the Bighorn Basin, booking hookup sites four to eight weeks out is prudent, and arriving mid-week improves the odds at the walk-up park-service campgrounds.
What to expect
The landscape around Lovell is high-desert (BWk climate) sagebrush and juniper, not forest. Horseshoe Bend Campground is open and flat with limited natural shade, so covered picnic shelters and awnings matter during summer afternoons. Wind is common on the exposed sites above the lake.
Cell service is unreliable inside the recreation area and effectively absent at Barrys Landing Trail Creek. Bear-proof food storage lockers are available at the primitive sites. Wildlife along WY Hwy 37 includes bighorn sheep and wild horses, so drive the highway during daylight when possible.
RV travelers should note the 28 ft practical limit at Barry's Landing, plan on self-contained water and waste handling in the primitive south-district sites, and use the dump station and drinking water at Horseshoe Bend or the full hookups at Greybull KOA Holiday for longer stays.
