Campgrounds and RV parks near Lucerne, WY

The main draws are water and geology. Boysen Reservoir sits at the south end of the Owl Creek Mountains and covers more than 35,000 acres, with boating, swimming, and fishing for walleye, perch, and trout. Wind River Canyon, immediately south of the reservoir dam, offers whitewater float trips, roadside geology pullouts, and trout fishing in the tailwaters below the dam. Thermopolis anchors the indoor and family options: Hot Springs State Park with free public soaking pools, the Wyoming Dinosaur Center with active dig sites, and the Hot Springs County Museum. Bighorn sheep are frequently seen near Lower Wind River and the three highway tunnels. Hiking, rock climbing, and rock and mineral collecting are common on the surrounding BLM lands.

Late spring through early fall is the practical window for most RV travelers. May brings the wettest weather of the year and green landscapes, with wildflowers along the canyon walls. June through August delivers hot, dry days, warm reservoir water, and peak walleye fishing and boating on Boysen. September is often the best balance of open facilities and thinner crowds, with cool nights and clear skies. October marks the transition to shoulder season: services around the reservoir begin winding down, and snow can arrive by the end of the month. Winter is cold, with average lows near 13°F and regular snow from November through March. Private parks such as Crippled Spider RV Park & Campground and Fountain of Youth RV Park stay open year-round, and Boysen sites revert to first-come, first-served outside the May through September reservation season, with reduced concession services. Wind is a year-round factor in the Bighorn Basin, and travelers should check Wyoming 511 for advisories.

Sites in the area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks to basic pads with limited hookups at Boysen State Park. Crippled Spider RV Park & Campground offers pull-through sites, tent sites, and cabins. Fountain of Youth RV Park has full-hookup pads and an on-site mineral hot pool. Eagle RV Park provides shaded sites with laundry and a general store. Lower Wind River has picnic tables, fire rings with grills, a playground, and vault toilets, but no showers or on-site dump station. Shade is limited across much of the Bighorn Basin, and wind exposure is significant, especially on the open shorelines of Boysen Reservoir. Cell service is reliable near Thermopolis and along Highway 20 but spotty inside the canyon. Trains pass on the opposite bank of the Wind River, and night noise is a common note in reviews.
